Not really the topic I expected this thread to be discussing when I came back to so many unread posts, but honestly I couldn't be happier. A new 40k meme channel popped up on Youtube recently with exactly this premise. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4dHZDdHgME

So Martyn Ellis saw Ohthere Wyrdmake, rune priest of the scandi wolves and decided "yeah he sounds like a saffer". Edit: No sorry it's "what if Matt Berry was a saffer". Black Griffon fucked around with this message at 19:35 on Jan 14, 2023 |

Is anyone looking forward to the Rogue Trader game? I've been waiting a long time for a traditional CRPG set in WH40K.

i found their writing pretty mediocre compared to obsidians best but they managed to sell enough copies of their poo poo to stay solvent unlike obsidians pillars of eternity so who knows and it might be a mechanicus sorta deal where the bl peeps drop in and make it materially better

I like Pathfinder well enough. I also played some of the Alpha and it felt really good to me, interested to see where a lot of it goes.

Up to now, the computer game with the best story was Martyr. Have you played that one?

A rogue trader isometric crpg has been my most wanted game for a very very long time when I saw the announcement I flipped out. I've got the alpha but have barely played it because I'm not big on replaying RPGs and I want to save it until I can play through the whole thing. I played enough though to know it's going to be really great. I even bought the super expensive edition with the statue which I've never done because I was that excited and wanted to throw as much money as possible at them to encourage them taking this risk. It was definitely a risk.

Assuming something like, say, four seconds per book, that's maybe four hours permitting breaks, opening a new box of books now and then, stretching and so on. I have no qualifications.

Martyn Ellis has a good voice for a thousand nerds, but I think he kinda sucks at dialogue at times. He sprints through sentences like he's late for something, giving no room for pauses where they would fall naturally. I've had to rewind a bit because I realize he's further ahead in the book than me.

Penelope Rawlins and Helen Keeley are both very good narrators too. Really enjoy the way Keeley reads as Bequin, gives her internal monologue a very appropriate level of dry sarcasm.

Emma Gregory in Tales of Heresy was such a breath of fresh air. It's ok to have a female narrator even if it's all space dudes insert clap emojis.

I've started reading Assassinorum: Kingmaker. It's pretty good so far. The assassins are more human than I would imagine just from reading the tabletop fluff, but that's also a much more interesting read than if they were like their portrayal where somebody had to fill up a tiny sidebar box and make them sound cool in as few words as possible. (There probably wouldn't be that much to an Eversor protagonist, admittedly.)

God I know they're a gaggle of useful morons, but I love reading about the Thousand Sons. They're just so interesting compared to a lot of the legions and I want more wizard marines in the 42nd millennium too.

So I finished reading SoT: Mortis this weekend and maybe it's because I enjoy bad books or because I had been expecting it to be boring but I actually enjoyed it for the most part. I can understand if someone goes into it expecting 24-7 Titan sized mega-bolter porn (and rightfully so due to the cover art) and getting annoyed whenever the story shifts to Ollanius Persson or someone or somewhere not directly involved with the defense of the Ultimate Wall.

I was annoyed that the ordo sinister had such a small part. It's one of the most interesting things in the heresy and we barely have anything written about it. A super secret psyker/null titan legion that only answers directly to the emperor and seems to have predated the crusade. The glimpse we got in Mortis was very interesting and then they just immediately march out and are never seen again. It was such a waste.

It didn't dawn on me until later that Orientalis-Echion was the only Psi Titan sent by Sinister to defend against Legio Mortis. It's immediately clear that it was effective against the revenant maniple. Why not deploy at least a couple more. Go all in.

Onto Nemesis, and boy is it nice to have a narrator who doesn't perform every single line with a falling intonation, especially for dialogue.

I didn’t read mortis. I pretty much started skipping every book that wasn’t abnett, ADB or Wraith. Is the Ollianus story line in mortis important? It kinda sucks that other authors would develop story lines of books I do want to read. If someone could spoiler me a short summary of the oll arc development?

It's of middling importance, but it's also pretty much a single chapter. you can honestly get all you need from a lore wiki. I was really looking forward to Mortis. First getting into 40K and sneaking wikipedia glances at work, the scene of Dies Irae and the legio bringing down the walls of the palace seemed so drat momentous. What we got was.... a disappointing muddle.
