taking singapore is not as impressive as it sounds because singapore didn't actually have any substantial defenses. which was a fact totally overlooked by churchill, who assumed that anything called "fortress singapore" probably had artillery and prepared defenses and therefore did nothing to actually fortify the island when war broke out

Question for the thread because it was brought up in a personal convo but I don't remember the truth of it: there's a CCP directive about movies and TV / animated stuff not being set during recent history, right? or am I misremembering?

the thing i still think about sometimes related to peng shuai is in her letter she wrote that the old guy told her he wished that he had been 20 and she 18 when they met
if you could wish for anything why still have a 2 year age gap, theres just something wierd and funny about that detail

the age you can get married in china is 20 for women and 22 for men. idk if it's just a baked-in idea of age gap

they don't want fictionalized versions of Mao/Enlai/Deng etc but like Battle at Lake Changjin is set in the 50s and came out last year. what do they mean by recent?

He did this last year!

I think he’s just an annoying student politics guy but his whole deal is trying to get ejected from places and then complaining that democracy is dead

https://amp.smh.com.au/world/europe...813-p5b9kj.html

quote:

London: Outspoken human rights activist Drew Pavlou has flown home to Australia after British police altered his bail arrangements while he remains suspected of issuing a bomb hoax against the Chinese Embassy in London.

The 23-year-old from Brisbane, who was arrested and detained by Metropolitan police for more than 20 hours on July 21, says he is being framed over the fake threat which emerged after he staged a protest outside the Chinese embassy. Brandishing three flags—representing Taiwan and China’s oppressed Tibetan and Uyghur Muslim minorities— Pavlou also glued his hand to the front gate.

Police notified Pavlou’s legal team on Friday that they had relaxed his bail conditions, pending further enquiries, for him to return on October 21. The decision also lifts a ban on the University of Queensland student to leave Britain.

“The past four weeks have been the lowest point of my life,” Pavlou told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. “I am so glad I can get home because I just don’t feel safe here in London.”

Pavlou, who has alienated even his some of his allies with a series of increasingly outrageous stunts in protest of Beijing’s human right record over the past two years, says he believes he “walked into a trap” .

https://amp.theguardian.com/austral...ce-wont-say-why

quote:

Liberal senator James Paterson said he was “concerned” that activist Drew Pavlou was escorted from Parliament House by federal police yesterday after the pair had met, but the AFP and the parliament won’t say why he was asked to leave the building.
Police officers told Pavlou he was considered an “active protester”, while sitting in a public cafe in Parliament House drinking a coffee, and that “higher ups” had said they wanted him to leave the building.
“An Australian federal police team interrupted me while I was quietly having lunch at Parliament House and directed me to leave parliament or face trespass charges as a ‘high risk individual’,” Pavlou said.
The Brisbane man is an anti-Communist party activist who has staged high-profile protests against Chinese human rights abuses and for pro-democracy causes in Hong Kong, including interrupting July’s Wimbledon tennis final by holding a sign and wearing a shirt reading “where is Peng Shuai?”.

When I was 23 I was relearning trigonometry so I could do completely manual torpedo targeting calculations in full realism Silent Hunter with a handmade cardboard Angle-on-Bow calculation and nomographs for the distance-to-speed conversions and that still sounds like a better use of time than traveling to the UK just to be thrown out for sending bomb threats to the Chinese embassy

No, Silent Hunter 1 (esp the CD version) is very good, but doesn't have the in-game tools or the graphical fidelity to enable full manual targeting with the exception of tricks like the Dick O'Kane method where you're always taking shots at a 90 degree angle.

You have to got SH3 or 4 (plus maybe some mods) to really be able to pull it off.
