lol at the story, when Jace decides to be a douche and force Vraska into a lover's illusion instead of listening to his partner he supposedly loves, but doesn't respect enough to listen to apparently. Got what he had coming to him, little shitass. Giving hi mthe Sylex back was a huge mistake.

Also interesting to see Vrasska and Nahiri contrasted against Lukka. Vrasska and Nahiri at least trying to fight it off a little, hold off at least, but Lukka pets one ugly freak and falls in love with the whole deal almost immediately.

Rules Questions:

-If I control an Archivist of Oghma, and one of my opponents controls an Aven Mindcensor, do I get an Archivist trigger if an opponent tries to tutor but looks at the top 4 instead of their whole library?

-If I control an Archivist of Oghma and my opponent casts a tutor and I cast an Opposition Agent, do I get an Archivist trigger if Oppo resolves before they search and I control them?

From gatherer on aven mindcensor: For effects that check whether a player searched a library or may search a library, searching the top four cards of that library counts as searching that library.

I would guess after the search since according to oppo they're still searching, but it's that you control them? Don't know about that though

How do we feel about Kaya? It's an interesting design and hexproof means most players have to throw creatures at it (although Invoke Despair is around) and she can steal creatures or even turn enchantments into them, so that seems to protect her a lot by taking a threat and making an ablative 1/1 with possible ETB exploits to be had as well. Her +2 gets them closer to losing and you further from it, but it's not fast and you pay 7 mana for her. 0 is an odd one, drawing 2 at the cost of letting the opponent scry is probably justifiable but always sucks to give them anything.

It’s an amusing case study in how card evaluation has changed over the years, to be sure. Players in 2000 didn’t understand how powerful free spells were (unless it was Force of Will)

sorry, no, that just isn’t true

“free spells = good” was not some sort of unknown concept that the primitives of (post urza’s block!) 2000-1 couldn’t comprehend, and free non-FoW spells saw *plenty* of play in Standard and extended/eternal formats at the time as appropriate

you need to remember that the creature/spell balance context was *completely* different as well as how relatively resource/value-abundant decks were(n’t)

free is amazing but a “free” that’s actually 1/5 your precarious and not-incidentally-refillable life total starts to look a lot worse vs 1 and 2 mana alternatives and snuff out’s 4cmc “alternate cost” was considered unplayable vs contemporaneous removal (especially in the Rishadan Port era)

like go look at the 2001 worlds lists - worlds are sort of weird insular formats ofc but I *really* don’t think Van de Logt’s Machine Head was hurting itself by committing to Vendetta over Snuff Out (and note the 2-3 decks playing free non-FoW counterspells + gush)

E: I use 2001 worlds over 2000 because it’s not hard to understand why Snuff Out wasn’t a big player in a tourney that ended in a Tinker mirror match

Modern is kind of funny because a lot of these deck shells (like Death's Shadow and Lantern) actually did exist for the longest time without anyone playing them, and it wasn't any particular new cards or metagame shifts that made them suddenly start seeing play, it's just that someone tried the deck for the first time and starting seeing success.

It's a rare occasion that I ever go out and buy a booster box, but I was stoked about Dominaria Remastered, so I treated myself for my birthday and did three sealed drafts with my partner.

The set is good, y'all. It was fun to see some really old bunk legendaries from Legends make their way in and find themselves a playable niche in a limited format.

Also, some highlighted pulls from the box:

- Yawgmoth, Thran Physician (Borderless, foil)
- Yawgmoth, Thran Physician (Retro Border)
- Sylvan Library (Borderless)
- Mystical Tutor (Retro Border)
- Enlightened Tutor (Retro Border)
- Force of Will
- Dark Depths (Retro Border)

All in all, worth the money on the drat thing and the games themselves were a blast. It's been a long, long while since I've actually had this feeling with MTG, and even if it's a fluke nowadays, I'll take it.

I had fun at the drafts I played at this weekend, even if I didn't win very much. Storming off in limited is a joy.

I also had the joy of playing against the most oppressive draft deck I think I've ever seen. It was mono blue with two oppositions, three horseshoe crabs, and 2 FoFs.

Oh, okay, I took it broader than it actually was, like random creatures and vampires and poo poo were showing up without explanation.

The wiki didn't mention this and can't see the real stories currently, it does say Nahiri and an elf got into a spat when the elf lied to and betrayed Nahiri when she was trying to fix up the planet and seal away the eldrazi again, and instead loosened the Eldrazi prison and made the planet all crumbletown.

It wasn't really a "racial" superiority stunt such as a "back in MY day" superiority stunt. Zendikar Rising's story was Nahiri and Nissa both contesting for control of the Lithoform core. Nahiri wanted to use it to return Zendikar to the way it was before before the Eldrazi were ever imprisoned and the plane became unstable, various empires and skyclave fortresses flourished, etc, a Zendikar without the Roil. Using the Lithoform Core would destroy the Roil, likely killing all the natural Elementals that are created by it, and according to Nissa, hurt the world.

Jace was also there trying to both sides the entire thing cause he thought they could use the Lithoform core elsewhere because Jace sucks

Maybe I'm missing some context but that doesn't sound so bad. Really, they both have the same problem of "who gave you the right?" They have the power to do what they want and stopping them can be cataclysmic, but still, weird to be shot-calling for the entire plane on individuals' whim. If they were on Earth in whatever plane this is, I'd say maybe Nissa has the advantage if only because the arrow of time is pretty sacred to us, but probably only because we don't know enough about it yet. Would be undo the past if we could, probably definitely absolutely. In any case, jus tfucking ask, take a vote, use your bigshot magic fuckin powers to ask the sentient beings of the plane you're trying to make massive decisions what they want to do. You can literally reshape the plane and trap elder gods but can't figure out how to send a magic ballot to everyone?

That's kind of surprising, albeit very dumb and obvious stalling for plot reasons. I was betting on the strike force getting almost to the finish line and then failing due to the Phyrexians compelling Karn nullify the sylex or make it backfire.

It does count. I’ll probably test it, the overrun might be a fun mirror breaker, and having a non-wish way to get rid of a pithing needle could be handy. Not being a hit off Storm the Festival is a bummer. I don’t think this is worse than any of the other random crap people are running until we get Oath of Nissa.

Probably, but two of the more annoying things Mono-G has to deal with is Pithing Needle coming down before Karn, and a stalled board when you can’t get enough devotion to loop. This is a reasonable fix to both. I don’t think it’ll be better on balance than Oaths and Bolas, but I think it’s worth testing in those flex slots in Explorer.

The fight hydra is a reasonable flex card and that doesn’t play nice with STF either FWIW.

Nissa and Wanderer both told him it was a bad idea, he kept pushing until it was basically like "jesus christ shut the gently caress up and do it then you dumb loving moron this is why nobody respects you" but more subtle.

Vrasska also told Jace to friggin leave, and he ignored her because he's a selfish arrogant turd who think his will should be respected over anyone else's (he'll make the perfect Phyrexian. It's disturbing and creepy how often and how casually he manipulates others minds or forces illusions on them. I would chalk it up to becoming compleated but nobody at all seemed shocked he was casually just violating people's minds, so I assume it's common when anyone is around him.

Spoilers for part 5 of the story:

Basically, they get down to the Seedcore and find that, whoops, it's already connected to a bunch of planes and the Phyrexians are ready to go now. This leads to a bunch of hemming and hawing about whether detonating the sylex will blow up the planes the tree is attached to as well and while Jace (barely holding it together and a hair away from being fully compleated) is firmly on the side of "burn it all down, regardless", Elspeth, Kaito and Kaya all seem to think it's better for their homes to be definitely compleated (instead of possibly damaged) for some reason and Elspeth stabs Jace, grabs the activated sylex right as it's about to blow and planeswalks away, leaving the rest of the team to get captured by Elesh Norn, who shows up right after to gloat.

It's pretty drat stupid and basically a bunch of people died/were compleated for no good reason.
