Check out codependency. a good PDF is this. Yeah it doesn't make it easy but I do know it. In fact I was two days away from filing when I broke my foot (over Xmas) so now I'm basically stuck in a situation where I know I'm gonna file as soon as I can walk again, but can't file right now because I literally can't put any weight on my foot so I need someone to drive me around and like help me bathe. For once she's sorta the caretaker. But yeah, it's been years so my mind is pretty made up. Thanks for the kind words and I may take you up on that chat offer in the coming months...

I love my kid. She's the second funniest person I know after my wife. Tho I suppose I cheatcoded by crossbreeding my sense of humor with my wife's ability to tickle it. Also the kid is only 2 (gonna be 3 next week) so she has time to climb the rankings

Another question: why have kids… and then outsource a huge proportion of the parenting/caring work to a nanny or daycare? I don’t think wanting to have kids is a necessarily vain act, but wanting to “have it all” sure seems like it. I hate the implication that I’m suggesting only households that can afford a stay-at-home parent (i.e. the rich) should have kids. But in my anecdotal experience those rich, high-achieving parents actually tend to be the worst in terms of parental absenteeism. Their kids are literally less important to them than their jobs (measured by what gets their attention, and, crucially, the fact that they have the freedom to leave their jobs).

Halisnacks posted:Another question: why have kids… and then outsource a huge proportion of the parenting/caring work to a nanny or daycare? Being a closed family unit seems like a very modern change in society. Putting kids together in a group is the best thing for them, imo. I was lucky to be able to take a few months off work. I loved the time relaxing with an almost one year old kid, but the kids were happy to go see people at a daycare. The workers at the daycare were great and provided lots of life lessons that I couldn't.

Okay I understand that re: daycare (and obviously proper school as kids grow up). What about nannying, when there is a paid stand-in for the parent (in the modern closed family unit) when the kid isn’t socialising with other kids?

Oh, yeah, big difference. You get a nanny because you want to pass on your superior genetics but you really don't want to make any sacrifices. Or, if you have the money, why not? You get to relax more, clean diapers less. Seems like a real easy way to raise a poo poo-head though, they are 100% going to realize they can make a nannies life miserable, right?

There are a lot of right ways to raise a kid, and a lot of ways people justify their neglect of their kid because "the nanny/daycare/swim coach/algebra tutor can handle that." Posted while my kid is telling his swim instructor about his imaginary friend instead of swimming.

The biggest thing is just to be present in their life and care. You need to make the time you spend with your kid/s the time you look forward to. You also have to realize that sometimes you may not like them but you will always love them. I go by those three things. The times when I have my son I try to teach by letting him do and fail, but being there to help him get back up and try again. I make sure to give him positive encouragement because the poo poo I got as a kid was mostly negative. I try to expose my son to new ideas, and philosphies because I sure as poo poo know they don't do that so much in school anymore. I truly enjoy my time with him. I know sometimes I make him mad because he wants to rush through things and I try to teach him that often the quickest way to get done is to take your time and be thorough, or that you are often rated on your work product no matter if it is doing your house work or cooking so that your quality of life is better or you are maintaining consistency at work. He is thirteen and soon he will want to have a job and drive and soon after that he will go to college if he chooses and learning these skills now is important...I know this because my parents did not work to teach me these skills and it was a lot of heartache for me. If you cannot do those simple things. If you have short patience or when you get angry you really explode you shouldn't have kids. Its simple as that. Recognize that your life will drastically change financially, and oftentimes your emotional needs will come second. Selfcare is still important but its not as important as when you are alone. If I could go back in time I would have done it with someone I loved( which is something else I am embarassing my son with...what healthy relationships are) after I got clean from opiates because now that I am not with someone actively making me miserable and I am not using a drug that numbs my emotions that takes up a lot of my heart and time I have so much more love to give to my son.

Tips: For making them sleep, if you have a couple of your own or are in charge of a bunch of them you can get them to play "the running game" where they have to keep running around in circles on a field. Whoever does the most circles in whatever time you specify gets a candy bar. You can just read a book or dick around on your phone while they do this, making sure none get lost or stolen or hurt. Once tuckered out, you put em down to bed and read them a story, or just improvise one. It doesn't have to make sense or be very good, they are dumb as poo poo and can't tell. It's especially a good story if you include them as characters if you are just making it up on the fly. Should they be early risers, you can provide a television or a Nintendo Entertainment System to get them to shut the gently caress up and let you get a bit more sleep until they want food. Kids are easy (for the male), hilarious, and terrible little funny monsters. The Butcher fucked around with this message at 07:46 on Jan 17, 2023 |

We decided not to have a kid and I kinda see my wife's side of things. You need a god drat village to help you stay afloat and it closes so many doors -- professional, recreational -- and forces so many compromises. But I get my papa kicks by being a cool uncle to my niblings. Kids can be pretty great.
