IMO mods should follow the standard of "when I have even the slightest doubt about doing a mod thing (probes, bans, or even just making posts telling other people how to behave), instead go and take a nap and ask myself if I still want to do it a few hours later"

Always just err on the side of doing nothing! It's not hard! If you're not sure whether to do something - just chill out and don't do anything! This would resolve most problems.

Helicopters are known for crashing; on the other hand, if it was shot down, I bet the Ukrainian government wouldn't admit it.

Does it make any material difference that this one guy's died? Don't know how important he was in the greater scheme of things.

Not related to that instance, but people do really go nuts about ChatGPT...when all it really can do is suck in the data it is trained to do so and most often the results are sort of lackluster unless you just want to create something that kind of sounds like the original work but is "just off." Also, ChatGPT can't really construct its own arguments or original material beyond what it is fed, it is a hard limitation of the tech. That is why the most effect for the tech in general going to probably be pieces of fan art that can look fairly impressive if again a little weird, or coding.

It is still interesting I guess.

Most people in Cspam have already figured it out but there are true believers out there.

It's close enough to sounding like a person that you can mentally paper over the "off" stuff, though. "Well, some humans also sounds weird sometimes," etc. This is probably what prompted the kinda hosed up comparison with autistic people - they probably used this mental rationalization for times the AI said weird stuff.

So if someone really wants to believe that AI (in the popularly understood sense) is here or imminent, there's enough there for them to convince themselves that this is the case. Especially if you don't have any technical knowledge of how it works. You'll probably have a Musk-esque understand of AI that amounts to "the more data you feed it, the smarter it gets; ergo it's inevitable that it becomes as smarter - or smarter than - humans."

I mean it is enough to fool some people obviously, but usually the longer or complex the prompt the more it falls off because there really isn't a core narrative to what they are doing beyond what is trained to do and the individual bits it is picking up.

That said, if you have any familiarity with it you can pick it up pretty easily, like someone cutting and pasting a wikipedia article. It is probably okay if you are using it as a specific search engine (as for coding) where you want to find something in a database its been trained on or you are using it for pop art (or lets be honest porn) since it can produce a believable enough result with effort.

That or yeah you are Musk and/or high at the time etc.

Yeah, most people already know what is going on but obviously there are "minds being blown" on Reddit.

Human intelligence as a whole is declining and the current generation aren't taught critical thinking, only blind idealogical adherance to whatever they're spoon fed.

So yeah they're suckers for thinking a scripted chat bot is "holy poo poo HAL 9000".

If they corner you just jingle your keys and throw them away, while they're distracted run for it.

it was probably not shot down by russians - this is in the kyiv area, where ukraine has powerful concentrations of air defences (also probably out of range, but i can't be arsed to actually check this). sabotage seems much more likely, and then it could be some internal factional dispute as easily as a GRU/FSB operation.

the minister of the interior is an extremely powerful position, especially in a country at war. he has political responsibility for all police, border security and national guard elements. before zelensky got into office, it was the post from which Avakov did his thing. the guy who died was one of the top ten people in the entire ukrainian war effort, possibly number three after zelensky and zalushny. it's big news.

e; obviously, though, everyone's replacable. this isn't going to change the outcome or trajectory of the war

it's not necessarily lack of technical knowledge. chatbot sentience follows from two very commonly held premises.

1. the mind is a computer.
2. the turing test is a valid measure of sentience.

given 1 and 2, if i am satisfied the chatbot conversation i'm having is sufficiently human-like, chatbots are sentient. these aren't very sound premises, of course, but they're held by many technically knowledgeable people as well. :3:
