Is King Oscar still a recommended source? I usually shop at Trader Joe’s but their sardines did not spark joy.

King Oscar is good at making sardines. Try his Mediterranean-style mackerel also.

I bought a bag of these on my last trip to the Asian mart When I first opened them they were pretty good in a really weird way, they were crunchy as hell and had a sweet lemongrass/lime/chili flavor, they sort of reminded me of Fruity Pebbles with a bit of chili and only a hint of fishiness, if you've ever tasted that cereal. Next day I had a few more - opening the bag earlier must have let enough humidity in to change them just a little, now they tasted far fishier and had a distinct "barn floor" aftertaste, again hard to explain but not very pleasant any more. I may not buy them again but if I do I'll remember to make sure they get used up immediately.

I'm usually not into non olive oil 'dines but I just had a tin of Nuri in spiced tomato sauce and it blew me away.

had a tin of Olasagasti Anchovies a la Basque last night, probably the best canned fish I've tasted, in super nice olive oil with red wine vinegar, garlic and chiles. They were 9 or 10 bucks so it was pretty much a one-time "try a new thing". Big can, like 7 or 8 ounces. The cats and dog wanted in but the chile heat was a bit much for them so I opened a can of two-row KO for the pets and I had a few of those too.

Haven't had dines in a while but I scored a pretty insane deal on some Gold Seal packed in Thai chili oil for about 60 cents a can. I've mostly been eating them mashed up with diced onion either straight up or with bread but I'm gonna try stir-frying them over rice next.

AEMINAL posted:Has anyone had grilled sardines? I hear they're amazing Not recently but my dad used to make them a lot when I was a kid. Rub a little sea salt and lemon on them (we'd buy a big bag of frozen ones) and whatever other seasoning and just grill. Super easy. He'd usually make them on one side of the grill when he'd be grilling other stuff as kind of an appetizer/snack and we'd eat them straight off there.

You can do the same with mackerel, it grills really well and with some citrus juice (or some kind of acidity) as above, it's great. Get that grill nice and hot and clean / oiled so you get a good char and the fish won't stick.

Man, I'd love to buy a bag of frozen dines for the grill. Not sure I've ever seen around me. Fresh herring is a thing in Minnesota and is awesome.

I'm not sure if there is one in Minnesota but if you can find anywhere with a decent sized Portuguese community (or just ask a Portuguese person) they'll send you in the right direction for sure. That's like a staple Portuguese thing.
