People who think that once you buy a computer it should stay static and perfect as an internet box until you don't need it anymore, like a TV, and the very notion of scheduling regular maintenance/updates is an affront to every atom of self-centeredness in their body. "My computer I bought 2 months ago and have never manually updated is forcing me to restart when I tried to log on for a wank? I have to learn new things in order to use this wonderful device made of lightning and precious metals? This is unacceptable!" Now ALSO factor in that machines might have intermittent success at auto-updating, and most updates are for boring things the end user can't tell much of a difference on, and sometimes the update really is happening when there's a work-related matter and is getting in the way, and you end up with some real self-righteous people.

Jim Silly-Balls posted:It’s been a long time since I was a server janitor, but I can’t recall the last time a windows update broke something for me im a rural shop computer repair person for context, windows had some kind of update a year or so ago where if you had a Kyocera printer and tried to print (not even a driver update, just plain windows update) it would cause your computer to blue screen as soon as you hit print that was a fun week. turns out not many people save their documents before hitting print. also turns out that windows will happily reinstall an update you manually roll back unless you pause updates for a week or two.

Took a few days to figure out.

It reboots every 8-12 hours now, and it always happens at a time when I’m busy and can’t fuss with figuring out how to roll it back, and then I forget until it happens again. Windows Updates have been pretty solid for a while now, though.

My PC's screen was HP and got turbofucked but the best part was my jobs PCs being 80% of them HP not working at all and having to restore to a previous version. Since then, I blocked automatic updates and I update a few weeks late after they hit.
