Even if a Japanese animated film made the cut, the Oscar voting pool is notoriously dismissive of the animated features category. They share some of the ballots sometimes and a lot of them are left blank or with a comment saying they "Just voted for the one my kids wanted to see," "I'm an adult, who cares about animation?" The Oscars are a joke, most people know this, but their handling of the animated category in particular is both telling and abysmal.

I'm convinced they always find the dumbest people for those anonymous takes because you also get stuff like a guy who said "Movies are too political these days which is why I voted for the apolitical movie American Sniper"
