I haven't fought any of the mech bosses yet, but for the regulars, you just need to counter their specialization. You wanna snipe the scythers, and bludgeoning a lancer with your gun is better than trying to have a gunfight with it.

Mzbundifund

I'm afraid so.
Scythes are pretty fragile and melee-only, so they have to close to chain-shotgun range, where they will be absolutely ripped apart before they get unstunned from an EMP.

OwlFancier

The diabolus is not especially dangerous but you want to fight it away from your base, because its main gun will destroy big chunks of whatever it hits, you can move your pawns out of the way of it, but it will destroy buildings and fixed positions. It comes with a turret that will constantly plink at you but otherwise it is not really capable of harming your soldiers if you keep them moving. Clear out its escorts first and kite it until you can focus it down.

The queen creates a constant swarm of crappy bots so you want area attacks, EMPs etc, anything that can do crowd control and prevent them from overwhelming you. It will eventually run out of materials so generally you want to survive the swarm until that happens because killing it quickly is difficult because it's a big mech. Again otherwise not enormously threatening.

The final psychic one is capable of resurrecting any mechs near it, so you need to focus it down out of the pack and destroy it as quickly as possible. High mobility and jump packs will help a lot with this. It also has a quite nasty toxin rifle that will gently caress your guys up a bit but it fires slowly, so it's more like a lancer or needler really in terms of danger. Some soldiers with powerful weapons, jump packs, and power armour will see you to defeating it quite handily.

Scythers are pretty easy if you can get them out in the open, aka into a killbox. If they're crash-landing on your base then they're a pain in the rear end but they don't have much armor

One thing that might make scythers seem worse is if they do close range with your pawns, your guys will start smacking them with their guns, which is terrible compared to the damage you'd do from shooting them. It's really important to kite them or get someone or something to engage them in melee that isn't your ranged fighters. Otherwise your DPS goes way down the same time they start slicing and dicing you.

If you've got a ranged fighter significantly faster than them they literally cannot hurt you while you slowly kill them.

QuarkJets
Sep 8, 2008

Yeah and like just 1 spellcaster makes them way easier to kite too, you can just Skip them to the edge of your range and gun them down as they have to approach you again

I also really like Zeushammers, they stun pretty often and do a lot of damage. But really your best bet is to get them into the open and then have a fast pawn kite them; put some bionic legs on someone

Is anyone aware of a mod that adds technologies for building walls and stuff? I want to play a start from nothing run, I already have the Naked Brutality set up and the mod that removes all starting technology but you still start with construction for walls. I remember seeing a YouTube video where they started with absolutely nothing besides a research spot and couldn't build walls or anything until they researched it, but I can't remember the mod or video. :(

That mod that adds those research steps and analyzing items and stuff for research boost has that I think. Name hilariously escapes me though.

You could prolly fiddle with the xml files for the research point amount to get the amount you want.

Speaking of mod recommendations, is there one that adds a stock/inventory screen? Just a screen on which I can check what and how much I have in the colony, maybe with some relevant statistics. Just like the drop-down inventory on the left of the screen, just not terrible.

I use InventoryTab and it's pretty useful when you're looking for something but can't find it in all your stock clutter.

"unsporting" does not begin to describe it

But yes I do this every time I lose my handle on an infestation. Scorched earth motherfuckers, kibble piled to the moon.

The trouble I had was striking a balance between scorching them hard enough that they get heatstroke and die before the room cools down,, but not so badly that they catch fire and try to break down a door to escape.

Consider wooden fortifications to save on wood. I think objects burn through their HP, so barricades burn for a long time.

Buy it by selling clothes, melt down everything. You can get a lot of steel from a drop pod raid because every raider pod leaves a steel slag chunk.

Minimize what you're using it for too. There's rarely a good reason to build anything out of steel, when every map is covered in stone chunks and/or wood.

I use Set Up Camp

This mod lets you "Set Up Camp" with a caravan on the world map (except not right next to other settlements), which streamlines the creation of a small map that auto-abandons just like any other small map would. On small or large hills you're likely to see a few steel deposits, so you can just set up a little wood-wall base and mine out any good stuff you encounter, maybe do some hunting if there's something with good leather nearby like a fox or a megasloth. This is a good way to build up a wood stockpile too, if you're on a map that doesn't provide much wood.

I buy steel and components from bulk traders and nearby settlements, usually by trading human leather dusters, space joints, and space cocaine

e: Just had an incident where 2 traders of the same (allied) faction came to my base back to back. Before either left, all the deer on the map lost their poo poo and came at me. My turrets and their guns made short work of the deer, but one of theirs was killed...

...the trader that I had just sold 3000+ worth of crap to. I scooped it and sold it to their second trader before they left.

You can:

1) Tame a bunch of animals to take on a caravan to buy and carry a bunch of steel
2) Set up a mining camp, where you make temporary housing and send a bunch of miners with rations to spend a few days strip mining all available steel from adjacent cells. Bring drugs for when they get sad!
3) Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (especially with an electric smelter, melting down raider's knifes and poo poo)
4) Orbital trade beacons with bulk traders

There's actually a ton of ways to get steel. Deep mining doesn't really make steel a renewable resource, it just lets you get more. I find that trading and setting up mining camps works the best for me.

Orbital beacons allow you to trade items in a certain radius of the beacon to traders.

Raids I think also target them to drop pod in sometimes.

They might crush the guns under the pods but yeah.

Generally drop pod raids go one of two ways, they are tiny and you easily roll over them, or 100 power armored marines roll over you.

It's generally better, I find, to just blow cash on everything you want all of the time because you can always increase food production or do ranching to make an absurd amount of money selling rice and/or muffalos or whatever.

You very quickly get way too many farm animals if you're not actively killing them. Like, 2 chickens turn into 30 chickens in a year or so, so in two years you're sitting on 500 chickens.

If the wiki is accurate, 2 chickens turn into 1200 (given enough food) in a just year. Chickens are crazy, but they will quickly become food limited.

That's the thing, steel is cheap and so goddamn heavy that I can't actually blow all my silver without an absurd number of pack animals. I'll buy out all of it when the traders visit me but I'll have other priorities when visiting other settlements. Focusing on higher value goods makes the return trip a lot faster too.

I would happily spend an extra day hauling 1000 steel home when I have no steel

Yes you need a lot of animals if you want to haul a lot of steel around. It's totally worth it, get some horses or muffalo or elephants and steel acquisition becomes way easier. You can also use the imperial shuttle permit to bring your caravan home even if it's overloaded so that's a good alternative if you don't want to keep animals

Speaking of permits, the steel drop permit is also very good

This is the largest I've ever gotten. And I still need a genetics lab, a pad for SRTS ships, a vampire lair (Dr. Acula's deathrest coffin is just sitting next to his bed), a warcasket forge, defensive emplacements that aren't just a handful of barricades at the water's edge...

Oh, on the topic of warcaskets, anyone know whether, if I pull a dead body out of a cryptosleep casket that I interred them in, with a funeral and everything, can I use them in a warcasket funeral too? And would it make any difference if the corpse was a child?
