Why do people dislike the sxs so much?

Also the trucks should have to haul furniture and however much remains intact at the end of the stage should factor into their score.

Sxs are like a nifty little car thing with a roof and a decent payload capacity useful for life guards, forestry, that kind of thing. Not remotely as dumb, useless or intellectually handicapped as a quad

From what I've seen, SxS vehicles make it easy to ride tough off-road and dune environments, without the exact skills required to operate other vehicles in those environments. They are also very loving expensive - not just on their own but also in accessories like a tow vehicle and probably a toy hauler.
It attracts more people to spots already perceived as crowded.

Combine all those factors and it's easy to see why they're hated. It's the newest and most expensive group on the block.

IME, SxS enthusiasts usually break down in families having a good time, and loud MAGA chuds with huge, insufferable flags.

Also, from a very personal perspective, it loving SUCKS to ride down a one way trail on a dirt bike and have a full sized 4 door SxS fling around the corner straight at you, operated by drunk morons.
I forgot to mention, SxS vehicles do make drinking and driving much easier too, apparently.

Interesting, the vast majority of sxs I see are doing some kind of actual job that can't be as efficiently done by a quad or a car

I guess not being allowed to drive them on the road here limits their recreational use

Right, those are farm vehicles like the Gator and such. I should clarify that I was posting mostly about the non-utility kind of SxS

Here at least it’s that SxSs and quads are folks ripping up and down the access roads with a half empty cooler of beer in the back. Actually, the quads are mostly ripping up and down the road by the parking lot.

They drive like jackasses, they’re often drunk and they’re playing an entirely different game than I am. To be clear, my game is “how much can I suffer and break parts of my bike before it stops being fun, oh whoops went way too far again gently caress.”

Of course some of them are just families riding around outside or folks who are serious about racing and performance and those folks are cool.

Stage 13

The battle today between Price, Howes and Benavides was still neck and neck.

Price finished four minutes and ten seconds behind first with Howes finishing a full minute faster than that.

But because of the time bonus for leading out for the top three, Price's time was reduced by 1m42s and his adjusted time was 2m28s behind first and kept him 1m31s ahead of Howes in the overall.

But the big news came from the Argentine. Kevin Benavides was first and is now a mere 12 seconds behind Price.

That means he starts in first on the last stage but as it should be quite easy in terms of navigation Price and Howes may not have quite the advantage they ordinarily would.

He's in with a shot but Price has to be the favorite with the lead and a starting position in fourth.

I wouldn't be surprised if Howes eased off a bit to avoid crashing and make sure he finished on the podium.

A minute and a half is probably too much to make up on the last stage but these folks aren't built quite the same way I am so he might just absolutely pin it.

van Beveren finished fourth on the stage and is in his best spot in the overall heading into the last day in fourth as well, a mere 8 seconds ahead of his teammate Quintanilla in fifth.

In cars, look, I know this is boring this year in cars. Made worse by bikes and trucks being so close. But Loeb wins again, Nasser is second and he's going to win next stage.

If you like Loeb, you can point out that he has six stage wins in a row - a record - and seven stage wins overall and that is very good.

But Nasser has clearly been milking his lead since Peterhansel and Sainz crashed out.

In trucks,

Macik finished first with van Kasteren coming in second three and a half minutes behind.

But the big news was van den Brink (old) running into problems and dropping 2h35m.

That moves him into third, but he's still ahead of his son in fourth, 85 minutes further back.

Stefan Svitko is in 12th overall after the thirteenth stage. He's a bit of a happy story in that he's gotten to race the dakar ten times and finished second overall in 2016 but, as mentioned earlier, a bit of a sad story because he's from Slovakia and that probably played a part in him never getting a factory ride.

Not pictured: half empty beer cooler in the back.

In sad news, heartthrob Matthias Walkner crashed out and was sent straight to hospital with lower back pain after riding for almost the whole race with a broken hand. Don't worry, he's OK.

Lining up for one last day.

Kevin Benavides started just 12 seconds back and needed to do it opening the stage on a very short stage.

Interestingly, this year they went back to the reverse start order on the last stage.

That means Toby Price starts last, Benavides second to last and Howes third to last and they all have to race up through the slower guys up front. It gives Benavides a real chance, but if there's anyone with real speed on a bike it's Price. Sorry, Skyler. I still think you're great.

Benavides was tied with Price at waypoint one
https://twitter.com/dakar/status/1614522386275094530

and then just turned it on. Putting himself 1m49 seconds up by waypoint two and finishing the stage 55 seconds ahead of Price and first in the overall.

Winning his second Dakar Rally!

Price finished second and Howes third

but everyone celebrated at team Mattighoffen.

I love how much the Benavides brothers seem to care about each other.

If you ain't first you might still be third and that's loving great at the dakar.

Price said that if he won this year he would retire to race trucks but I wonder if that will still happen after he came in second.

Some day Ross Branch will find the man who stole his eyes.

Cars was no surprise with Nasser winning his fifth title in cars.

Loeb was second.

It was no surprise that Macik came in second in trucks.

With Janus van Kasteren bringing first home to the Netherlands for Iveco.

van den Brink (old) coming in third.

And van den Brink (child) making a strong case as the future of the trucks category in fourth.

Charan Moore came away with the overall win in malle moto.

Kirsty Landman was first and only among the women racing malle moto.

Look how exhausted she is the night before.

It's sad, but don't worry it will be back next year. And all the riders are good instagram follows for posting stuff like "lol watch me just nonchalantly rip at absurd speeds on a rally bike in various places as training."

On a related note, this is a good example of SxS behavior. This is a bit tame vs. what I've seen but the blind corner, not able to brake in time, drink in hand, kid in the back, no helmets is quite typical as a baseline.

guy who posted that video posted:

Hard to see but if paused at 14 seconds you can see the driver and passenger are both holding beer cans (Ultra lite). So he's driving this fast, drinking and with just 1 hand on the steering wheel.

In fairness, there are also folks who ride dirtbikes like colossal pricks. I don't like them either. And I have no beef with anyone who's riding around in a SxS having fun not blasting blind corners at 40+ while hammered.

I’m only mad at dirt bikers going too fast if I’m riding there on a bicycle and they blast a blind corner, but everyone I’ve encountered so far has been respectful and gave a thumbs up. Comes down to the “power hierarchy” and the negative externalities you create. The bigger the vehicle the more responsibility you have because not only can you kill someone around the blind corner but also whoever you’re carrying.

On a dirt bike you’re likely to just bone yourself as you bounce off some lifted truck. Unless there’s lots of hikers/bicyclists using the same trail, this is not super common though. Only two places locally where I can think of this happening and we are a significant cycling destination.

Yeah... I don't know, at least here we have dirtbikers who are pretend racing on trails and ones who are going off trail making their own tracks, particularly hill climbs, in areas where you're not supposed to go off trail which leads to rutting out areas that aren't meant for riding which gets folks who aren't riders angry and leads to areas being shut down. There is, apparently, a near constant fight about this going on in the pine barrens for example even though jeeps tear things up way worse than bikes. But for whatever reason, bikes drive folks nuts. And it seems like the bad bikes are a much smaller percentage of total bikes than, for example, SxSs but I do have some significant bias.

dema

Rented a SxS in Moab and it was some of the most fun I've ever had.

That said, gently caress a huge portion of the SxS population. A lot of them just haul rear end with zero regard to any potential oncoming trail traffic. Main character syndrome. I've had bad encounters with them almost every time I was on 4x4 trails in my truck or on my dual sport. And even a few times on my mountain bike.

Never mind that, as others have mentioned, they seem to be the worst at respecting the trails and ecosystem around them. Great fodder for the folks that want to ban all non-hiking or horse use.

SxS ATV’s like normal ATV’s can be cool and good and serve a purpose, but they constantly get ridden by knobs who give the whole thing a bad name.

I'd much rather have something like a Suzuki Carry or Honda Acty, depending on location it might be street legal...or strip down a Suzuki Samurai and fully cage it. SxS's are fun but they can be rented. You'll have more than enough of your fill of that community after a day or two.
