A change I'd love to see on Goblin Bet would be for the bettors to be able to somehow influence the skill choice of the monster they bet on. Maybe give a list of of the skills under the char sheet during the fight and you can cheer for one of them. Most cheers = better RNG chance to pick it or something like that. Last night I got to watch a warlock attempt to club something to death instead of just eldritch blasting its rear end.

If we can game it's choices it loses its informed decision making appeal. It's try and choose a winner not make a winner A warlock trying to club someone to death is funny.

That's actually a big design thing I've been thinking about through the game's development! It would be really cool to eventually let player (possibly pet owner?) actions have some impact on the fight--like, that's a really fun thing to do. It's also true that the game is more fun when it's more unpredictable--I've had to resist the urge to make smart monsters, because if they did play optimally they'd play the same way every time which would make matches boring way faster. I'd love to add a thing that lets players meddle somewhat, but I need to make sure it's rare enough that it adds to the chaos instead of flattening it out. Stuff like letting a pet owner give one command per match or letting a donator give one command per tournament or something is on the table, potentially. Also, I should probably mention that this game isn't actually a fresh release (although I super appreciate being featured in this thread). We launched late 2020, and actually had a heyday for a bit where it was pretty consistently 500ish players on at any given moment--which was actually a big problem, because people found us before I got accounts in, so when 4chan found out about us we had no way to ban people for being racist and transphobic. There was a mad scramble to get mod tools in, and since then the community's been really wonderful--although it's definitely gotten more and more sleepy over time. All the new players from this thread has been really motivating

Here's a neat turn-based roguelike that I haven't seen mentioned yet. Seems inspired by Rift Wizard and Magicka. Released a few days ago, usually $20 but currently on sale for $15. Also it has online co-op and supports at least 5 players at once, possibly more https://store.steampowered.com/app/1618380/Spellmasons/ https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256920995/movie480_vp9.webm?t=1671202863 I've only put about 30 minutes into it so far. My initial reactions are very, very positive but I haven't made it very far and don't know how much the complexity keeps stacking up. The video above has the dev explaining and showcasing the gameplay better than I could through text, but here's the more traditional trailer from the steam page: https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256921604/movie480_vp9.webm?t=1671203179 From reading the reviews it looks like it's a little lacking on enemy/dungeon/spell variety, as well as some bugs (multiplayer desync) that the dev has been very actively addressing. It's not Early Access so I checked the Discord to see what the future plans are: stretch goals are steamworks modding support, pvp, and hotseat multiplayer. Steamdeck support is also a stretch goal but the dev posted yesterday that the community has it working on the deck. No specific mention on whether there are plans for more content variety but mod support should take care of that either way. deep dish peat moss fucked around with this message at 09:42 on Feb 3, 2023 |

Oh I'm aware, was checking a Let's Play and the impression I got is that it's pretty similar to mobile games in that it fires up your lizard brain with all sorts of rewards, but minus all the microtransaction bullshit. Rather, you are the one who employs microtransaction bullshit on your unsuspecting clientele as you bilk them for all they're worth. It does seem stressful to play, but sometimes you're in that mood. I got I Was A Teenage Exocolonist on the last sale hoping for some fun scifi adventures and ended up getting that but also Famine And War Crimes Simulator, so it wouldn't be the most whiplash I've gotten from a card-based time management game with romance elements. The romanceable characters in Potionomics are pretty hot tho, very interested in Deer Woman Who Smokes Weed and in Perpetually Tired Nonbinary Dealer Who Keeps Eating Your Ingredients, Even The Rocks

The competitions themselves aren't that difficult though, if your potion isn't outright better you get a lot of time to play your negotiation deck against the judge (like 5x what you get against a store customer). I found it to be pretty chill while also having enough stakes to not be boring, but personal preference here is gonna go a long way.

I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, so I figured I should bring it up: Scorchlands https://store.steampowered.com/app/1090100/Scorchlands/ Scorchlands is a game I tried the Demo of last year, it's an odd game about a bunch of birds terraforming a hostile moon while carfully planning buildings to maintain supply and demand. The Demo is still there if anyone wants to try it, not many reviews but the overall outlook is positive according to Steam. It's currently in early access, I feel I should mention that.
