I keep thinking that our economy would not support Euro, the weakening PLN and beneficial conversion rate help to maintain our status as cheap labor for the rest of EU, the backbone of our world :v:

Can't you just have one of those parties in December? We used to do them in foul weather, and it was just a matter of picking one person responsible for keeping the heat under the grill going and rotating food.
Nowadays I have LPG grill, so it's even less of an issue. The bonus of those is you can keep vodka chilled by having it outside.

Funnily enough, it often rains in my hometown part of the country around Midsummer, so I’ve spent half of my teenage years grilling in lumber storage sheds and similarly safe circumstances lol. Doing a shashlik party in December would be something new for me though - half of the experience is eating it outside while random farm animals are lounging around.

Eastern Europe in general is usually fairly low-debt and export-intensive.

Not being on euro mostly just suppresses wages in favour of big companies.

E: What happened to Greece was largely because of their spiralling debt while they were not allowed to inflate their way out of it, which is not something that really happens a lot in Eastern Europe.

Eh, the current Polish government is doing enough creative accounting, that it's getting harder and harder to say what the state of the finances are. So on the one hand having an independent currency makes some sense to try to stabilize poo poo, but on the other - :rubby: about the current national bank being independent.

Slovakia got the euro and their wages (and overall standards of living) are still lower than the Czech Republic. I don’t imagine Czech people would be happy to switch to the euro, but that’s not a concern given the currently high inflation anyway.

For SK in 2022

quote:

Průměrný výdělek v absolutním vyjádření sice meziročně vzrostl o 7,4 procenta na 1291 eur (31.630 Kč)

For CZ in 2022

quote:

Not sure where you’re getting your data from, and also, costs of living in SK are still higher than in CZ. Maybe my data is wrong, but I can’t find anything reliable saying what you’re quoting.

Edit:

Looking through Slovakian sources this is the most recent info I can find: https://ekonomika.pravda.sk/ludia/clanok/649117-priemerna-mzda-atakuje-1300-eur-pozrite-si-v-akych-odvetviach-sa-zaraba-najlepsie-grafy/

I saw some websites reporting the average you mentioned, and there’s a suspicious 400 eur jump in their averages citing official sources but with no links to them: https://tradingeconomics.com/slovakia/wages
Maybe you have access to something more official? Jumping the average by this much feels miraculous at best.

Right, but it’s still not that different by the national average:

quote:

Not that it truly matters all that much for sure, but I don’t think I’ve ever met a Czech who would rather have the euro instead of the crown.

If we look at Eurostat: https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php?title=GDP_per_capita,_consumption_per_capita_and_price_level_indices

Czechia and Slovenia have identical AIC, which means that people in both countries broadly can afford the same poo poo. Price index in Slovenia, however, is 1/3 higher than that of Czechia, roughly, which would mean that Slovenians are paid more, to be able to afford the same poo poo. And Eurostat is happy to confirm that for us as well, that the adjusted average income level in Slovenia is like 50% higher than in Czechia. https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/products-eurostat-news/w/ddn-20221219-3

Oh but I do think you're right that most people do not want to switch to Euro, so it is a bit moot (even ignoring the switchover criteria).

e: I think they might have confused nominal and real average wages which is where the jump came from.

And apparently the median wage in Slovakia is 1288 eur, so around 30k czk. The point was illustrating the difference between CZ and SK and why for people in CZ the eur may look unappealing.
