It was 100% kid logic, to the point when I started learning how to program (in VB3) a year or so later I spent far too long trying to figure out how to get multiple pointers on the screen.

Settlers 2, a city-builder game from 1995, had a multiplayer mode that was split-screen, and both players had to use their own mouse.
