It helps that they have like a 4 foot wingspan and weigh less than 10 lbs.

from a few days back, but note that the australian magpie belongs to a different bird family (Artamidae) than the eurasian/american magpies (Corvidae). Australian magpies were named for their likeness to the magpies back in europe.

Also as a neat coincidence they seem to be smart even though they're not corvids

I think the one OP posted is a Dalmatian pelican, which wikipedia says has a wingspan of 9-10.5 feet. The American white pelican gets up to 9.5 feet, and the brown pelican is somehow the smallest pelican at "only" 7.5. They're all loving monsters and have no business soaring as beautifully as they do.

I'm lucky enough to have browns year-round and American whites seasonally where I live. I want to move within the next five years, and I have often thought that they are the thing about Florida that I will miss the most.

Wow, apparently I mentally rounded down their wingspan by that much because I subconsciously still couldn't believe how big their wings are.

I like how pelicans will try to eat anything, regardless of size. Depending on the size of the target this is either a hilarious nuisance of an existential threat.

We haven't shared it anywhere on here yet, but the day we lost Kylo, Dienes found this little guy in our bushes out back, which was a weird coincidence (felt like the universe trying to balance out our loss).

We had the quail hospital cage, but he was clearly unhappy in a bare cage with no perches (especially with that long tail), so she picked up a quick jungle gym and some toys we could give to the quail after since they love mirrors and bells.

He was a chill little bird. Last night he seemed to have finally settled in and started making happy chirps and whistles while I was cooking.

But there's a happy ending! We had called vets and posted in various places to find his family. This morning Dienes got a message on Nextdoor and was able to confirm this is their bird. He's back with his family and everyone is so happy :3:
