i seen somewhere (probably itt) that they're also putting a shitload of money into isolating and capitalizing unknown tropical coffee species before they're made extinct, with the plan of developing a strain that can be transplanted somewhere, somehow, and keep up the cashflow. The child slaving plantation owners know that the existing ranges will be choked down so tight there'll be no such thing as coffee unless steps are taken. This was portrayed as saving our precious biodiversity & promoting the economy iirc.

i was p surprised to find out there were like 10+ coffee spp vs the 2 kinds you know about, some of which have better or more interesting flavors than regular coffee but grow specifically in certain tropical rainforests or some poo poo i don't remember.

But the other caffeine plants that aren't tea are probably hosed because they're only local and don't lend themselves to industrial farming as well (and also grow cooler afaik)

Yup, two “exciting” corporations to follow with certainly not evil company names are:

Ark Corporation:

quote:

https://www.technologyreview.com/2013/03/19/179340/a-stealthy-de-extinction-startup/amp/

The company, provisionally named Ark Corporation, is being cofounded by stem-cell pioneer Robert Lanza and Harvard Medical School DNA expert George Church.

I heard about the startup last Friday at TEDx DeExtinction, a gathering of conservationists and molecular biologists interested in bringing wooly mammoths, Tasmanian tigers, and other extinct species back to life (see “An Unlikely Plan to Revive the Passenger Pigeon”).

It’s interesting stuff. Who wouldn’t want to see a saber-toothed tiger?

But here’s the deal: the very same biotechnologies needed to reanimate lost species are going to have far, far greater financial and social impact when they’re applied to commercial breeding of livestock, pets, and even humans.

“There are just so many downstream implications,” says Lanza, who is chief scientific officer of Advanced Cell Technology, a stem cell company.

Ark, he says, hopes to help revive some extinct species, including a Spanish mountain goat. But the company’s real aim is to combine cutting-edge cell biology and genome engineering in order to breed livestock and maybe even create DNA-altered pets that live much longer than usual. “Imagine a dog that lives 20 years,” he says.

At Colossal Biosciences, we endeavor to jumpstart nature’s ancestral heartbeat. To see the Woolly Mammoth thunder upon the tundra once again. To advance the economies of biology and nutrition. To make humanity more human. And to reawaken the lost wilds of Earth. So we, and our planet, can breathe easier.

These things, which were not achievable before, are now. In our laboratories. Through our breakthroughs in CRISPR and genetic engineering.

We are leading the new charge of bioscience. We accept the responsibility. And we can see the light at the end of it all.

celebrating human numbers going down is malthusian. it is ecofascist. we could have literally infinite numbers of people if we built sustainable, walkable cities that are dense. Look at all of that unoccupied land in the western US. If we built up cities as dense as NYC, you could have so many bodies living in that space, instead of being wastefully spent on wilderness. Where does the food come from for feeding all of those people you ask? Well, you import it!

Because the plastics get put in people's brains instead of turned into other useful goods.

Plastics recycling is a scam because hardly anything actually gets recycled and it's mostly just greenwashing to justify making more plastics

Recycling other stuff like aluminum and paper is OK I guess but still only has like 50% efficiency

"Della? Take a lid"
The actual "recycling" of plastic produces a bunch of pollutants without resulting in much reusable material. Consequently, it's got a poo poo profit margin, besides the fact that it's really not doing much to begin with. So the US started selling off most of its plastic to China to be processed there cause no one wanted to do it here. That worked okay for a while with plastic getting recycled (poorly) in China up until about 2017 when they stopped buying our plastic cause it stopped being profitable. Since we're not selling it off a lot of the plastic you separate into a different bin is just going to landfill cause no one is buying it for processing or paying for it to be processed.
