And now for something completely different. Not images but fiction on RoyalRoad. Reborn as a Goblin https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/62634/reborn-as-a-goblin Haven't read it yet. Goblin Mode https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/62333/goblin-mode Goblin adventurer. Stonesong [An Illustrated Grimbright Fantasy Adventure] https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/55150/stonesong-an-illustrated-grimbright-fantasy-adventure Haven't read it yet. Seems to be underdark goblin priest? Goblin Cave https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/54904/goblin-cave Not about goblins. It's about a Dungeon Core. The goblins are remote controlled dolls basically. Literal NPC's. The Iron Teeth: A Goblin's Tale https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/4293/the-iron-teeth-a-goblins-tale Goblin bandit. Goblin's Glory https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/48895/goblins-glory Human reincarnated as a goblin. Keeps his skills as a master swordshuman. There is no Epic Loot here, Only Puns. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/15935/there-is-no-epic-loot-here-only-puns It's about a Dungeon Core. But there's goblins and they are fully fledged characters. The Wandering Inn https://wanderinginn.com/ A massive book series with some of the chapters following goblins. Very good writing. Utterly hearetbreaking though. Being a goblin in a standard fantasy story really, really sucks.

No no no! Strong acids will destroy your emulsion, always responsibly chop up your goblin with swords, heat to 200 degrees C and add root of soap, as well as any sweet smelling herbs your druid can whip up.

Ill be honest, the pathfinder goblins are not my favorite. Just dont like thier design, i approve of their demeanor of gleeful rambunctiousness but they are too round. Makes me think they are baby things.

Halloween Jack posted:What distinguishes a kobold from a goblin, thematically? Pretty much how it goes; Folklore: they're basically the same thing(though this is also true when comparing them to Dwarves, Gnomes, and even Elves, there being any real meaningful distinction between various fairy types that are just "little men" is basically a 20th century invention for the most part) OD&D: don't have much of a description, are basically just "Goblins but even more wimpy" Holmes Basic, BX/BECMI/RC D&D, and AD&D 1e: when TSR decides to try and make them more distinct from Goblins for the first time, depicted as scaly small humanoids with dog features(when D&D gets imported to Japan in the early 80's the translation leaves out the scales which leads to Kobolds in Japanese fantasy media being pretty much exclusively dog men, much like how Orcs usually are pig men) AD&D 2e: the style shifts to them being drawn as more rat like in features, probably where WoW derived it's Kobolds from, doing them as more rodent inspired creatures never really catches on though, probably because of the Skaven from Warhammer Fantasy(indeed probably why D&D has mostly shied away from rat people aside from Were Rats), later in the edition we start to see them get drawn more reptilian in form though... D&D 3.5: this is when Kobolds more or less permanently switch to being little reptile men, though any connections to dragons are treated as more legend than fact initially D&D 4E: this is when them being explicitly tiny dragon men is codified, though Dragonborn becoming a core PC race steals a lot of the impact this had D&D 5E: continues the 4e lore, though the art has started to add back in some touches from the 1e era "scaly bipedal dogs" designs

Japanese TTRPG goblin/kobold dichotomy:
|
# ? Apr 7, 2023 17:49 |
Halloween Jack posted:What distinguishes a kobold from a goblin, thematically? The difference is subtle as they’re both small malicious critters. A goblin would go out of their way to hurt something. A kobold goes out of their way to steal something. And a gremlin goes out of their way to break things.
