Owen had never done anything like that before, he used a "regular" tombstone. Austin can say all he wants he asked Owen not to do a sitout tombstone. But why would he? Owen never did the move like that previously. I read that Undertaker wrestled in the same show so they (Owen? Austin? can't remember lol) didn't want to use a move that looks too much like someone's finisher so it became a sitout tombstone

New Jack has a handful of these that I know of, stabbed a couple guys, including the that kid. Tazed Vic Grimes and through him into the underworld (twice? or did someone else toss him the other time) There's a video I've seen where he just Barry Bond's some old dudes head in the crowd... I hope that was a worked bad because I don't know how that guy didn't die if it was legit. on a tangeant; who are the unsafest workers to work with... ie Who's injured the most people -- I'm not really talking about the Jinders (who while are bad wrestlers, as their killings seem to be accidental). I'm talking more about the Madcap/Ridge/Austin's who just love breaking necks. Miz catches not included.

MassRafTer posted:Other than The Sport of Brawl 4 All or Ali vs Inoki, both of which were planned shoots using a different ruleset before going to the ring, the most recent actual shoot in a major promotion in the US would be June Byers vs Mildred Burke from 1954. Burke had just divorced noted creep Billy Wolfe who booked women in the NWA while champion. Wolfe responded by dissolving her title and creating a new championship. Wolfe planned for Nell Stewart to win, and Burke reported that to the press, but Wolfe swerved her and had June Byers win instead. They ended up doing a match where neither one would lose, and it became a shoot. Burke got injured during the first fall of a 2/3 falls match and the ref declared Byers the winner and Wolfe had her recognized as undisputed champion. Ok two questions involving the term 'stable' 1) How long has that term been in the pro wrestling lexicon? 2) How often does wrestling actually refer to a group as a 'stable'? Unless talking about a group with 'stable' in their name it seems to mostly be a fan term.
|
# ? Feb 7, 2023 13:45 |
|
I might be wrong about this, but I think the term comes from boxing. Boxing managers would refer to their collection of clients as a stable, I believe the first uses for the term in wrestling were also to refer to a group of wrestlers with the same manager.

That reminds me of another one: I read that Rick Steiner tried to take liberties with Hade Vansen at some indie show and got a thorough rear end-whipping for it. Sadly there's no video. Question: were there particularly bad periods of locker room bullying in WWE (or any other big promotions anyone feels like talking about)? It seems like all the worst stories I've heard come from the 00s, especially when JBL was at his peak.

As you might imagine, Mr. Simmons held a grudge. Ron just obliterated Ahmed their first match when Ron was back, broke three of his ribs and cut Ahmed's big push short and he was gone inside of six months. Apparently he also got into a fight with D-Lo where D-Lo stretched him.

When did Ron get a nine month injury after a match with Ahmed? Longest cagematch has him out for is April of '97 after the LOD/Nation street fight at WrestleMania. Mark told a story about Ahmed on Austin's podcast about Ahmed attempting to spike Mark's drink in a bar one night, luckily Mark noticed before he drank it.

That same Mark story is where I got it from but doing some checking Henry's timeline is all kinds of weird. Everything I can find says Ron actually injured Ahmed in Ron's debut. So that's on me for listening to wrestlers' stories. In the same bit he talks about how D'Lo hated Ahmed but if you listen to D'Lo he actually says he likes Ahmed, just doesn't think he's really bright.

Maybe he meant weeks? 17.03.97 has Faarooq wrestle Ahmed in a six man tag and WrestleMania 13 was on 23.03.97 which again has Faarooq vs Ahmed in a six man match. Ron doesn't wrestle until 9.05.97 which is roughly six weeks. He wrestles Ahmed at In Your House 15 and then on the house show circuit so there's plenty of chances for him to whoop Ahmed's rear end.

Who was the first "monster" character in wrestling? Not like "he's huge he's a giant!", but rather the first supernatural character. I think the earliest I can think of is like El Santo fighting monsters but that was in movies afaik, who was the first to use a supernatural gimmick in ring?

What are the best wrestling books in terms of literary quality? Have any received acclaim beyond wrestling circles? (More in terms of history, cultural studies etc, I should clarify - I’ve read plenty of [auto]biographies) Answers Me fucked around with this message at 13:57 on Feb 8, 2023 |

Depends what you want to read? Biographies or books about wrestling itself or specific companies? Off the top of my head: Death of WCW is a fun read. Foley and Jericho’s first autobiographies are good, I never read any of Foley’s other books but Jericho’s get worse and worse as he starts writing more about Fozzy and how cool and funny he is when he’s drunk. Bret Hart’s autobiography is good but you will come to realise the Hitman is obsessed with peeing. Moxley’s book is good. Chris Charlton’s book about the Tokyo Dome is good.

I was being intentionally vague because I really don’t mind about the subject, was just keen to pick something up about wrestling that’s generally considered to be Good Writing. Thanks for the suggestions!
|
# ? Feb 8, 2023 14:06 |

It’s hard to nail down “good writing” because most of the more interesting books are autobiographical and not a lot of people who get dropped on their head for a living are also Shakespeare. The Young Bucks’ book is also worth a read.
