They're going to be trapped if they don't withdraw soon. It might be too late already if they have to do so over a road that Russian forces have fire control over.

I think Russia is trying to not escalate with the USA the uk is a joke country no one cares about and it makes it clear they think the USA did it but want to avoid saying so directly.

The British connection may be that the Royal Navy had a bunch of craft involved in Baltops 22 including a destroyer and a large number of patrol craft. At least in number of craft they were the single largest contributor. At least for the story to work, they were at least in the loop to provide a protective cover for operations and to ward off Russian vessels.
