Paramount announced a 4k release for star trek strange new worlds season one. Show looked great streaming and here I am considering it, I'd like to think enough purchases would convince them to do something with deep space nine but who am I kidding?

it's a good one! not as good as Alligator (it's hard to come close to that honestly) but definitely top tier monster movie. good pick for a movie night with beer, pizza, and friends - not for so-bad-it's-good laughing, but for a rollicking fun time. richard lynch does his own version of henry silva's role in the original, love that dude. now i want to watch it again.

They lost so much money on the TNG HD restoration that there is zero chance of them doing a similar effort for DS9, which was substantially less popular.

They'd also have to re-render all the CGI.

i haven’t truly liked a Troma film since Terror Firmer but I hope they never fold. I loved lots of their stuff, especially as a kid. And honestly through his writing and interviews Lloyd also opened up a whole bunch of little avenues and alleyways for me, from Stan Brakhage (now one of my all time favs) to Silent Spring. I’m from a very small city and wasn’t raised in a progressive household, and it’s just cool how someone like him and an entity like Troma could make the world seem so much bigger. Can you tell that I’ve had an edible?

The only season that was hosed up was Season 2, which was outsourced to HTV Illuminate. After they messed up that season, all the remaining seasons were brought in-house to CBS Digital (and they all looked incredible).

The problem was that the sets weren't really priced to sell, and the HD remasters wound up on Netflix and Amazon Prime within a few months of the discs hitting retail.

Strange New Worlds is very classic episodic Trek, I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit. Christopher Pike has had a vision of what he thinks is his death so he’s even more reckless and gung-ho than Kirk was, and also just kind of a wonderful goof. There are a lot of fun characters, some early versions of TOS folks like Uhura and Chapel.

Eh... for an example of the issues I've encountered, I picked up a discount-but-sealed copy of Ocean's Thirteen. An hour and a half in, it stops. It'll work again if I jump to about ~20 minutes before the credits begin, but that leaves about an hour of dead 'film'...

I'd like to find out that sort of thing *before* getting settled in and into the movie, you know? Isn't there some kind of software that could check for errors like that?

This has happened to me sometimes too—I've found brand new DVDs at used stores, perfectly clean, and they'll behave like that or just won't even play at all, no matter what player I try them on. Would love to know a solution as well.

there isnt really any sort of conceivable way of getting around that besides checking each used disc manually in a player and fast forwarding through them waiting for it to freeze/skip unless the store has maybe a way to rip discs on the spot and maybe in that process the program would spit out errors if it ran into issues during the process (which maybe a laptop would be the same effort on both of these fronts).

there was also this issue back in 2008-09

https://blog.son-video.com/en/2019/...%20the%20resin.

quote:

The company published a press release stating that the problem was caused by a batch of tainted resin used between June 2008 and June 2009 when adding the second layer to the Blu-ray discs. This layer begins to oxidize and peel, altering the disc over time, eventually making it unreadable. Not all of the discs pressed by QOL during this time period are affected, but the company wasn’t the only one to use this resin and several other editors specialized in Blu-ray discs, such as Metropolitan or Arvato, worked with the aforementioned factory without knowing about the issue up until 2011. As a result, the short list of defective Blu-ray movies grew very quickly. This list now includes no less than 295 references and gets longer every day.

i dont think there really is a way to find pressing dates for stuff. i just combed through some of the older blu-ray titles i have and not even on the inside ring of the disc is there much info. You're kinda beholden to the back of the packaging that will have two dates. the date the movie was originally released and then the date the package of the blu-ray was released. You could also go to a database like blu-ray.com and look up each title and then check the forums if there was any known issues with the disc so at least there's some sort of idea if you might end up with a bum one and can hedge your bets that way.

e2: the bigger caveat is that hardware standalone players usually have more error tolerance and can skip frames, but at least you'd know and could also check the suspect disc against a player too

It's disc rot and you can fix it by replacing the disc. I've had discs rot, notably both Lucky Louie and Louie S1. Everything else notwithstanding Lucky Louie is a stamp classic and it's a goddamn shame my discs don't play anymore. I had left them in some extreme temperature climate but I also had a bunch of other titles there that seem to be fine? Alas.

I only mention this because I wanted to share. When looking up disc rot last night, I found this "people also searched" and was/am intrigued.

Only time I think I’ve seen disc rot was with my copy of Alpha Protocol. It worked when I first got it and subsequent install attempts on different computers would fail partway through. Never seen anything like it before even on burned discs from the 90s.

I've purchased thousands of DVDs and Blu-rays from thrift stores over the last couple of years and it is astounding how few have actually been bad. The ones that I've had the most problems with are Warner Bros HD-DVDs. There was some massive manufacturing error with those at one point so it's a coin-flip if they work.

A good amount of them are pretty good B-movies/melodramas on their own. Yeah the acting is serviceable but there’s an earnestness to it that is both charming and fun. Occasionally you do get a good crop of people who want to put on a performance and they’re even good on occasion. I haven't gone through all of my bargain/thrift finds yet, but of the ones I have, there have only been a handful of sketchy ones. Two outright duds that were both sealed and both from Dollar General, one skippy disc from a church sale (it's the good DVD of Terminator 2, so I'm just gonna suck it up until I find a better copy), and a few volumes of Stargate SG-1 that kinda-sorta work but that's not surprising because I happen to know that they've been sitting in an un-HVAC'd barn for a decade waiting for someone to buy them. :thunk:
I may have bought them after returning from living elsewhere during that decade, since nobody else did. also there are other volumes that DO work fine, go figure!

There's a podcast called The Rialto Report where they interview the people from the "golden age of porn" which is really interesting, I highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in the films from the 70's, 80's, and sometimes 90's. Anyway, it generally gets mentioned here and there through these interviews, but a lot of those old pornos, started as an earnest movie, but could only get funding as porn, so the loving got added. Sorta the way that Star Trek TNG porno 10 years ago started as a rejected script.

I will admit that I kinda get bored with the boning, and will fastforward through them sometimes when I'm watching a Peekorama release.

The best thing about the Columbia sets, which was a very pleasant surprise, was they had each movie in it's own individual case AND slipcover too. So I don't even have the sets together in the box, I pulled the movies out and filed them on my shelf in the usual way and they look totally normal like any other blu ray case.
