Governments really want to be able to read your dms. There's a proposed European Council law banning encryption services that's so broad in scope that it could potentially make open source software and OSes illegal. Obviously wouldn't happen because that's would impact on the entire global IT infrastructure but still the sort of thing that briefcase nonces are determined to legislate on without even understanding what the thing they want to ban is.

Yeah every iPhone and Android from the last decade is encrypted by default. And most of the messaging devices have gone end to end encryption. So what they seem to be after is the off the shelf custom phones designed to counter surveillance and sold to people who can't figure out how to just flash a custom ROM. Often sold at huge markup or as part of a subscription. I used to live in a 15 minute city, it was loving amazing. Every city should be more conveniently laid out and have major amenities like a university, hospital, shops, parks. Best thing about it was it was technically a city, but was a medieval city so more like the size of your average town.
