Guavanaut posted:A city where everything you might usually need is within 15 minutes of where you live. Rarity posted:Oh I have this at the moment, it loving owns Yeah, it's really funny seeing the "15 Minute City " become the latest right-wing bogeyman, where the WEF are going to put you in a ghetto surrounded by guard towers manned by blue-haired non-binary woke snipers, your car will be taken away and you won't be allowed to travel more than 15 minutes from your home. I live in a Victorian/Edwardian suburb that hasn't been (totally) ruined by car-pandering and austerity and it's pretty much a 15-minute neighbourhood as it is. If you include cycling in that 15-minute timeframe the city itself probably counts, thanks to a once world-class cycle path network that has somehow not been sold to developers and some genuinely good New Town 1950s zoning decisions. It basically just requires having a high street that's not entirely bookies and vape shops, a pub, a cafe, a park, a school, a community hall and a library. There are loads of places in the UK that are already 15-minute neighbourhoods or very close to being so. But as soon as you put a name to 'thing that already exists' the paranoid right will immediately take against it as some sinister plot to undermine our way of life. Especially if you start proposing that there should be more of them and that might require some people to experience a change of lifestyle or some aspect of society and large impacting on their daily routine. Double-especially if it involves reducing/removing car usage. BalloonFish fucked around with this message at 14:41 on Feb 10, 2023 |

Blocking it with cheese could just be someone doing purple monkey dishwasher humour. But the specificity of 1612 and gorgonzola is just bizarre unless there is a subwriter on the team deliberately trying to make this an antisemitic joke.

I've been replying a lot to Kelvin MacKenzie on twitter over the past couple of weeks attacking his fascist opinions, and I didn't get a single bite. So I switched tactic, knowing absolutely nothing about his personal life, and replied to his latest tweet "I can totally see why your family wants nothing to do with you". I think the 1612 thing is a stretch. The Fettmilch uprising was in 1614, not 1612. Tensions were simmering in Frankfurt prior to this--including during 1612 when the new Emperor came to power--but that's true for almost every historical event--the actual massacre took place on August 22nd 1614. You could find an instance of Jewish persecution (whether pogrom, massacre, expulsion, or some onerous and degrading new law) almost every year between 1100 and 1650 somewhere in Europe so any date you pick in that range you'd find something. Fettmilch's uprising is notable only in that it was one of the last (in the HRE), it killed two people, and it ended with Fettmilch being executed and the expelled jews of Frankfurt being returned to the city under imperial escort. Of all persecutions an anti-semite could glorify, this one is arguably the least successful ever. For this to work our hypothetical anti-semite needs to know about an obscure event in the history of one city in germany, needs to decide to obscure the allusion by moving it off by 2 years, needs to think that Fettmich means "full fat milk" in german (which it doesn't, really, that's a bit like calling dark chocolate "no milk chocolate" in English), needs to know that gorgonzola is made with both full fat milk and animal rennet, and needs to know that this specific cheese is not Kosher for that reason. This seems unlikely to me, given that most alt-right people are complete morons whose idea of "talking in code" is pretending to be a literal clown and referring to the holocaust as "baking 6 million pies". They're not capable of that level of subtlety. The horn is bad enough without going full conspiracy on it. EDIT: On second thought, put the offensive term they used for the holocaust in spoilers Reveilled fucked around with this message at 15:46 on Feb 10, 2023 |

First Bus were alright until they scrapped the 3 stop hop which used to be exactly enough stops to make my ~30 minute walk to work into a 5 minute bus ride if I felt like a lie in. The Metrobus is still ok if you want to get into the city centre without spending 45 minutes doing laps of Bradley Stoke first.

You can tell theres a lot of american far right backing to the 15 minute city conspiracy as restricting the hours a car can use a road using cameras and fines is equivalent to erecting those force fields the Combine use in half life 2 to them.

Objecting to the 15 minute city thing is so bizarre because why would anyone living in a city not want local services within 15 minutes of them? Oh wait, it's because they don't want The Poors at their nice local well-funded services, and prefer them corralled in areas with lovely or no amenities elsewhere.

I was a bit old for the HP books (first came out when I was a teen iirc) but I tried reading it and was just ‘This is Jennings except bad, with a poo poo magic system thrown on top’. I’m almost those exact words. (I have not dared look at a Jennings book since I hit puberty, and prior to that was roundly bullied at my own public school for reading them, but even though I’m sure they’re plenty problematic today I doubt they’re Potter levels of offensive).

Harry potter was readable when it came out and you were 11. 20 years on you pick it back and realise the entire series of books are endless plot holes, bad decisions by everyone involved, incredibly stupid retconning and incredibly lazy plots. I wouldnt read it to my kids now because jk rowling sucks poo poo. Looking forward to reading them terry pratchett though The best roll model is as you say, star trek. Particularly TNG.
