Doom Eternal's tutorial literally says "gameplay loop" at one point and I think that was a signal that it wasn't the game for me. It felt like they designed it to impress game system designers.
I definitely think they went way too overboard on making all the design theory explicit. It makes it seem like they were too insecure that the game could speak for itself and it needed someone standing over your shoulder to explain every decision, like they're showing a product demo to their boss. A lot of the explanations are way too narrow as well which is why people get the impression that it's designed with a very restrictive playstyle in mind, when it's really not that restrictive at all. The things that Doom Eternal tells you to do to win are meant to show you how you can win, not to show you how you have to win.

And whatever you think about the Marauder, it's just one enemy, and definitely less restrictive to kill than the Icon of Sin (edit: the Doom II version, that is). And I still hate Pain Elementals more.

Doom Eternal is uniquely trying to be an FPS CAG and so being more open about its gameplay systems isn't a problem for me, since those games are all about the plate spinning and mastering mechanics.

I liked Doom Eternal fine and didn't really have any issues with difficulty on it (ended up getting all the challenges and such I think done) but I just didn't like it as much as 2016. I understand wanting to further the formula and not wanting Eternal to feel like a map pack for 2016 but even as a character action game fan I didn't find the amount of abilities/grenades and such that engaging. I had fun but haven't really felt like replaying the game either, I dunno if I can even describe exactly why I feel that way. It felt like if I wasn't using the "counter" to most of the enemies they were much more damage spongey and that's fine to a point but I don't really appreciate that method of trying to get players to use weapons that aren't the siege gun or whatever it seemed a ton of people solely used once they got it in 2016. It's not at all to that level but it just reminds me a little of the DmC color coded enemies.

A lot of the decisions they made with DOOM Eternal really seemed like they really wanted (and did) to make a complex character action game but were afraid of losing your average schlub with no attention span and thus had to spend ages introducing all the mechanics one by one and go through which buttons to press in which order to defeat all the enemies, for that that can't figure it out by themselves.

They probably should've copied the Devil May Cry approach to difficulty instead, where the max available difficulty mode for your first playthrough is actually fairly easy and spends the whole game introducing mechanics to you while being easy enough to let you ignore most of them, and then after you beat the game once THEN it gives you access to the real game where the campaign is remixed around the player already having and knowing how to use all the tools.

It's up for 3 more days. If you download before that then you can keep the demo, as long as you don't uninstall it, but since it's a multiplayer game the devs might shut down the servers for the demo after that.

What is a character action game?

I gather one controls a character (singular) and does actions?

One of the worst named genres. I prefer Spectacle Fighter, but not too many people recognize that either.

It's the games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising, etc. Usually 3rd person games focused around fancy combat systems.

A normally third person hack-and-slash or beat-em-up with an emphasis on timing and combos. I'd say Doom Eternal is more of a distant cousin of that genre than a true attempt at making one. There's really nothing specifically different about Doom Eternal than any other FPS other than the over-emphasis on specific systems design.

I like character action games (I'm not very good at them, but I enjoyed DMC 4 & 5 and Metal Gear Rising on the medium settings) but I just couldn't grok with Doom Eternal. I loved Doom 2016, but I think I got up to where you got the crossbow in Eternal and just put it down and never picked it back up. Just found it too busy, didn't want to juggle a dozen cooldowns in a Doom dame.

Maybe I'll give it another go again some day, but I'm in no rush.

It's another perfect example of "genre name that doesn't tell you anything about the game itself"

Basically it just refers to any sort of game that provides you some number of "abilities" that usually have cooldowns and are clearly designed to serve specific purposes. Your ammo refilling Chainsaw, your armor refilling Flame Belcher. It's also often used to refer to heroes "with abilities like a DOTA / League of Legends character": eg you have a crowd control ability, a movement ability, a damage dealing ability, an aoe ability etc.

Very "rigid" design where every tool has a purpose, as opposed to ye olden days when every gun was just a vehicle for murder and you picked the one you liked to murder with.

I don't know when you played it but they have added a whole slew of various accessibility options that can make the game easier/more comfortable to play.

i'm getting near done with complaining about genre names at this point because they're ALL being muddled. what is "adventure" now if it applies to tomb raider, monkey island, and plague tale? "roguelite" can mean literally anything at this point. people are putting "immersive sim" on simulator games like house flipper. "metroidvania" on any game that has an open world or a double jump. "souls-like" on anything witih a dodge roll.

you just gotta go with your gut when looking at screenshots/footage

Character Action makes sense to me because it immediately tells you the two most important things about the genre: A charismatic lead and fast-paced combat. Player expression comes from making the character do cool poo poo, which usually involves some form of technical mastery. It's at least way better than immersive sim, which tells you nothing helpful while also being mostly inaccurate.

My main take on Doom Eternal is that I’m incredibly upset at myself for buying the narrative clownshow that is Dying Light 2 for full launch price. It starts off solid enough to convince you that maybe goons were just hyperbolizing as usual but it falls off the rails pretty quick from there.

Bless y'all for putting this on my radar. The hockey part is fun and arcadey (though I wish the AI positioned itself better for one timers). I swear because of the roguelite mashup there must be a hidden % roll every time you shoot. Am I dumb is there a trick to beating the refs?

My first run I lost fair and square 3-2 though they sure felt overtuned skill wise. My 2nd run it was tied 1-1 and I scored a goal in the 3rd but it was overturnen, then out of nowhere they got awarded a goal when the puck didn't even go into the net (which thematically is hilarious but gameplay wise is frustrating as gently caress). The meta-currency (rubber) doesn't seem to save and so I can't really rate the permanant upgrade side. Am I missing something or do I just have to git gud? I swear I saw northernlion beat it earlier today.

Thankfully I'm so starved for a hockey game on PC that I'll give this another crack but goddamn does the roguelite aspect might drive me insane.

My biggest gripe is shooting on goal just seems like a coin flip - I'm always pleasantly surprised when one goes in but not sure what made that shot different than the 5 before it. Also the AI scored by glitching the puck through the back of the net, that was lame. I haven't even made it to the ref match though, I'm just terrible :v:

I installed Madden 23 because it's free on gamepass now, and I knew people were giving it poo poo ratings on Steam because they didn't do the next gen updates for the PC version that the consoles got but I don't think I was ready for just how bad it looks/plays. It really feels old. I'm glad I don't really care about Madden and they never bothered to port NHL to PC so I don't have to get mad at them inevitably loving those games up too.

I get what they're saying in that building your deck isn't part of "playing magic".

You show up with a deck you built and then play at the deck; but the turns don't involve you composing the deck while cycling through it.

But I don't agree with it, not fully anyways
