Percy is a homebrewed fighter subclass so he has decent HP and AC as well. As a rogue, Vax has several tools to mitigate damage. VM weren't all that squishy overall.

In VM's defense, only a few members of the party are all that squishy because Scanlan's the only pure arcane caster. Pike wears plate armor, Keyleth has Wild Shape, Vax has Evasion and Disengage, Vex and Percy both fight from range and while Vex is squishy, Percy is really not since his actual class is Fighter so he's got a hefty hp pool and Second Wind. Where VM really excels is the number of people in the party who can heal, even if it's just spot healing or picking up somebody that goes unconscious. Pike is the main healer but Keyleth, Scanlan, and Vex are all capable of at least casting a heal, even if it's weak, and Vax will eventually get Lay on Hands. Grog was also often entrusted with a bunch of potions, not for himself but so he could run over and shove one down someone's throat, and he saved a few lives that way.

This abundance of healing in Campaign 1 was what lead to the hilarious circumstances of early Campaign 2 where Laura had decided to play a cleric because Pike always seemed to be lots of fun and swiftly discovered that she was the only person in the group capable of casting a healing spell which meant she wasn't allowed to do anything fun because it was critical that she save her spell slots for healing. Luckily, this problem ultimately corrected itself.

Extra fun for her too because despite being such a RP heavy table, Matt balances against 7 players by running some particularly deadly fights. He wasn't afraid of killing PCs if they slipped up at all, which has already been shown in VM. And everyone who knows knows exactly what I'm referring to :v:

There was also the Incident where somebody had a class that was powered by damage to their HP when they only had a d8 hit die. This has sense been largely corrected in updates as far as I know.

I do believe Blood Hunters got bumped up to a d10 hit die but they're still pretty garbage (sorry Matthew). Order of the Lycans is the only subclass worth a poo poo and then mostly just because being some flavor of were-animal makes you much tankier, enabling you to more easily survive doing damage to yourself because your stupid class is designed to do that.

Anyway the moral of the story is that if you want to be a successful D&D team, you can have a designated healer but somebody besides that person should also be able to cast even a baby heal like Healing Word. Friends don't let friends run one-healer parties.

Alright I finished watching the episodes and they're good, I don't want anyone to take the wrong thing from what I'm about to say. I did like them.

But BOY they did not do the Feywild arc justice. And I get it - the Feywild storyline in the original campaign was like 5 episodes long, a solid 20ish hours total. Obviously they were gonna have to cut some poo poo down. But that means losing a lot of fun stuff like Percy showing off his knowledge of the Feywild, then immediately getting blinded for a few hours because Keyleth touched something she shouldn't have. Or Percy getting charmed and going to Scanlan about it and Scanlan bitching that he has an ability called Countercharm "But I don't know how to use it!" Or Grog shotputting Garmelie across multiple rivers at a time. Or the werewolf pack that's at war with a bunch of pixies and honestly the pixies are the real dicks. Or the campsite they found with mysterious music coming from nowhere and Vax got stuck under a compulsion to dance forever until Grog raged to make himself immune to charm, charged Vax, grabbed him, kept running, and Percy had to shoot Grog to keep his rage up (since he wasn't taking or dealing damage) so Grog could get all the way out of range of the music. And also, to be honest, Percy and Vex's conversation was a lot more heartbreaking and sincere in the original.

But in fairness, if you were going to really do the Feywild justice, you'd need half the season to do it and I really do understand that they don't have that kind of time.

Not really a spoiler since it's just d&d stuff, but by the end of campaign 1 for the most part they were very unlikely to ever lose a fight with the abilities they had on hand. Part of that is just high-level d&d at work, but I also feel like Matt wasn't going full-court press on every fight they had (which to be fair, you don't really want to do as a gm in general anyway).

On the Orion front I've always been shocked at what an incredible opportunity he let slip away from him there. I felt that way since back in the mid campaign 1 days when I started watching CR, and obviously the magnitude of the missed opportunity has only increased exponentially from there.

I agree that there are some bits I would've loved to have seen in the Feywild, but only the lack of Percy smooth talking the grass really made me sad in particular. They danced all around it, it would've taken all of 30-60 seconds, and they could've made it fit into the story so well! It could've made him seem like an expert early if he tried it and it worked, or it could've started the trend of him being in over his head if it blew up in his face.

Or when they gave Garmelie the "threshold crest" he wanted.
I'm surprised they didn't take a second to set up threshold crests in general. They're going to be relevant in the Mighty Nein adaptation too.

I mean the weirder implication is that Garmelie has always been able to open portals to the Material Plane? Granted he's a Fey so he's inherently fickle and maybe after this he gets a wild hare up his rear end and decides to start loving around with mortals more, but it's still strange to retcon it such that VM aren't the ones who enabled him to start some poo poo.

Fenrisulfr
Oct 14, 2012
They haven't actually shown Garmelie using the portal (or on the Material Plane at all as far as I can tell), so if they wanted they could throw in a "this method makes me lose 90% of my power outside the Feywild" line or something and it'd be fine.

Definitely some interesting changes, although I think the way they arranged everything worked out pretty well. I was expecting them to do more with Ripley than they did though. I'm kind of unclear on the point of adding that into the story if the only thing it adds is telling the Conclave about the vestiges, which most of them don't seem to care about.

That's probably just to keep the character "alive" in the audience's minds, because she'll be key for the next arc. Campaign Ripley does know about the Vestiges and is going after them herself. This came as a surprise to the players and characters in the campaign, and having her here sets this up so it's not a sudden twist when she interferes later on.

I'm extremely familiar with how it played out on stream, I was an avid Campaign 1 watcher when it was current. I just mean it felt like a waste of screentime given how often they showed her and how little she did. They didn't need nearly as many scenes as she got to keep her in non-stream watcher's minds, especially given how tight the time constraints are for every episode.

I really love this adaptational series but I really found the ending to Umbrasyl anti-climatic to say the least. I appreciate that they wanted everyone to have a moment but I felt like Umbrasyl is dominating them the entire fight and then Scanlan just shows up in the nick of time to kill him on one hit wasn't the way to do it. In the original, Umbrasyl is on his last legs and roars in pain and fury "I WILL FINISH THIS!!" and breaths acid on the party, and in an ironic twist this attack triggers a reactionary counter-attack from Grog, which was just enough to finish him. I can appreciate the writers don't want to gloryhog to Grog, and Scanlan finding his resolve being the big part of the episode but the price was a really anti-climatic death scene.

Falling...
Overall, I thought season 2 was fantastic and was a big step up from season 1.

I also though the battle against Umby was a little anti-climactic. I dislike when the heroes are having big drat hero moments but the villain doesn't seem to be affected much, if at all. Like, Umbrasyl never seemed to be in any real danger, he always had an air of not being bothered by the crew, even with their vestiges. I would have liked the fight to have more of Umbrasyl being on the ropes, damaged and angry, than his whole "you can never defeat me" attitude. Maybe that's what they were trying for with him being a dragon and all, it just made the vestiges seem less powerful than they were built up to be. I may think differently on a re-watch.

A little of the same with Kevdak. Grog had his big power up moments (which were *loving awesome*), but even when Kevdak had to rip his own arm off, he didn't seem bothered at all by it. And the sudden switch of "power metal VM destroying everything" to "we're in serious trouble!" was a little jarring. I could rationalize it afterwards by reminding myself there were hundreds of the Herd they were fighting and they would be overwhelmed, but that wasn't very well conveyed.

All the other stuff though - Grog's glow up, the dragon fight as a whole, Vax officially accepting his duties as the Matron's champion, and Scanlan's whole ~thing~, it was all aces.

I do agree with what someone else pointed out - Ripley was very tangential and kind of pointless to the whole season other than reminding the viewer, "hey, there's this villain still out there". If we had more of an idea of exactly what she was scheming, maybe it would have been different, but as it is, she contributed nothing to the story. I would have liked it if there was a moment where we discovered the reason she was allying with Umby was to steal the vestiges from him or something like that. Not a big deal though.

Best screenshot moment in the Killbox: Percy's badass hellsing/batman moment with his gleaming glasses in front of an explosion.

I liked it Scanlan never got to kill the King (and the Queen) of the Underdark in the animated series, so giving him a dragon as a replacement seems fitting. Also the symbolism that "The Hope Devourer" was taken down by the guy who's job it is to give everyone "inspiration"
