I only have the 2+ but the front end menu they add on top of Android is really good, apart from a few idiosyncrasies in the way it sorts its game lists. More than anything else it’s a super fast front end which makes the whole system feel really quick, especially compared to the classic Linux EmulationStation type front ends.

I think what they mean by "loaded and ready to go" is that it comes with their custom android setup wizard that makes the folders for your roms and bioses and installs and configures all the emulators for you, none of the retroid pockets have come with roms themselves since they ditched the pandoras box os.

Does the 353M come with something like Retroarch preinstalled? Is there something better for that than Retroarch that people recommend using? I think I'm going to pull the trigger on one of these but I haven't messed with emulation since I set up Retroarch on a Pi like 5 years ago so I dunno what's changed since then. Also for stuff like backing out of games, opening other games, saving/loading savestates, etc. is that just something you tap the screen to bring up the android soft keys for or are there like button combinations to do those things? Edit:

Mokotow posted:Mind that this layer is gone in Rp3+ That's a shame - it was really fast to get into and out of emulated games with it. I found it quite uncomfortable to play games on it but it was so easy to just get in and out I played a bunch anyway.

As I understand it the 351/353 devices come with an android/linux dualboot setup, with Retroarch on the linux side and an android 11 setup with touchscreen support on the other side. You could maybe find some way to sidestep Retroarch but generally speaking it's preconfigured really well on the custom firmwares and when dealing with the occasional standalone emulators for certain systems I often find myself missing its convenience (aside from its menu layout being as horrendous and dumbfounding as ever). Button-combo navigation is usually pretty crucial on the linux side and it's kind of amazing how much can be accomplished by treating the power button as a modifier, but I have no idea how much of that carries over to the android side. I have the power of a PlayStation in a matchbox here, I can play original arcade versions of things like Space Harrier and OutRun instead of settling for the compromises of whatever console port, yet I can't help myself going through "best of" lists for systems I'm less familiar with and finding that there is, for instance, a Game Gear port of Road Rash that is insanely impressive and end up spending more time with that version instead. I loving hated the Game Gear, had one with Sonic 2 for about a week before returning the whole kit (never did make it past the antlion), but this is an absolutely wild level of terrain simulation for an 8-bit handheld. I just never had a device I'd want to try playing Game Gear on before. Or Spectrum. Or the uhhh [consults notes] Sharp X1. But when I don't have to spend hours hunting for what plays these things or how to configure them, why not!

Saoshyant posted:What's with the Playstation buttons on the top of the thing? I assume they're meant for use in VR primarily, where most games are made expecting a 2-button per hand controller. Having them side by side alongside all the other buttons feels like they're bad for that though, you need those immediately recognisable by feel because you're not going to be able to see them. Also the headset seems badly designed and there's a lot of "they say they're going to fix this in the final retail version" over the course of the review which tracks with what I've heard about Pimax devices in general, release it broken and fix it over time. njsykora fucked around with this message at 13:58 on Feb 13, 2023 |

It slightly annoyed me when he made the distinction between LCD and QLED as if a QLED isn’t a VA LCD. That backlight scanning looked bizarre on his camera at 60hz though - I’ve never seen that before. I assume it’s something do do with an array LED backlight which should help contrast while combined with PWM backlighting. The machine killing itself when asked to do VR seemed a bad sign since it’s from a company that is supposed to specialise in VR headsets.

So I heard, from an acquaintance who is into these things that there's this thing called an "Anbernic RG35xx" but that I shouldn't bother because an "RG35xx Plus" is on the way that will probably have a heatsink, wifi, and a bigger battery. All I realistically am gonna do with it is play emulated Final Fantasy Tactics (PS) and Mega Man Zero (GBA) games, MAYBE finally play Boktai (GBA). will it do this?

I have heard nothing about a 35XX Plus so I’m gonna say your friend is full of poo poo or thinking of the Miyoo Mini Plus. Either would do GBA and PS1 stuff without any trouble.

Honestly for ps2 and up you can't beat a modern android phone with a grip style gamepad attached. You probably already have something in your pocket that will run aethersx2 better than anything cheaper than a steam deck
