NEWT REBORN

Slashrat posted:

I enjoyed Lost in Space as a sci-fi adventure, but I wouldn't say it invokes the Dark Forest hypothesis in any way. The show's mainly hopeful in its message by showing the alien robots are fundamentally benevolent and empathic, but have been corrupted and just need to be shown benevolence by humans in order to revert to it themselves

I’m not sure that’s fully accurate; Lost In Space threads the needle by having the vast majority of the robots be completely indifferent to what humans are up to. They’re only really benevolent due to a programming quirk where extensive repairs cause them to reboot and perceive the rescuer as a ‘master’.

Payndz posted:

Season 1 or season 2? :haw:

(Actually, season 1 of Space: 1999 would fit quite well into the Alien universe in terms of tone. Space is a cold, hostile place, filled with beings and creatures that want to kill you just because, and even in the tiny survival enclave humans have established there's still a good chance that you'll die horribly and pointlessly simply from being in the wrong place at the wrong time. All the while, cosmic forces you have no hope of ever understanding toy with your existence for their own purposes, until suddenly they're done with you and you're abandoned to random fate. Enjoy!)

Space: 1999 is more of an overt mash-up of Original Star Trek and 2001: A Space Odyssey - meaning that it’s precisely Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The TV Series. There are a couple Alien-adjacent episodes, but the idea of the universe being cold and uncaring is largely dispensed with, once it’s clear that all the rubber-forehead aliens are actually evolved humans from future times and the cosmic purpose of the Alphans is to populate the universe and bring all these civilizations into being. That’s why my watch-list omits those particular episodes.

Then they would be Bumhuggers instead.

Didn't that wooden planet script for Alien 3 have concept art of an alien hiding in the toilet and killing a dude that shits on it? Would have been terrifying hearing xeno hisses muffled by the ferocious splattering of diarrhea and pained groans before a close-up of a turd-drenched xeno slowly parting its teeth to tongue gently caress a priest's arse flashes on screen.

They could have played it like Alien 3 with the guy running out of there sharting blood everywhere and everyone thinks he's crazy like Golic because maybe he has a history of this kind of thing so he gets imprisoned and left to flagellate himself for his butt sins until Ripley smells the poop xeno with her own eyes.

Stephen King wrote a whole silly book about that and had the characters call the main aliens "Ripleys."

As an aside, I was quite fond of the synthetic spec ops unit from those Icarus issues. Would be neat if they ever pull that idea into live-action.

"Slap some tits on that xenomorph" - the plot of a bunch of dark horse alien comics as I recall (don't correct me)

e:

quote:

Before the leader of the survivor's group, Melody, unsurprisingly betrays the troop of Synthetics, she reveals that the new strain of Xenomorphs - dubbed the "Icarus Strain" - have evolved to develop human-like emotions and intelligence levels. This is... truly terrifying, and completely changes the future of the Xenomorph, which has previously been described as an almost cosmic creature.

Hm, that's what I like to see in my cosmic horror. They're people now, they got feelings and they can call you names.

This genuinely never happens. Well, to be fair, there's a comic that has a sort of xeno-synth hybrid that happens to be a woman but she is in no way portrayed as sexually provocative or anything like that.

I haven't read the Marvel comics at all yet but them mining Giger's other biomechanoid artwork and making it Alien-adjacent is a halfway-novel concept on paper. The closest the Dark Horse stuff ever came to doing that was having free-standing Alien hives in the comics look like Giger's 'Alien' concept art for the "egg silo/pyramid" from early in the film's production, which I always thought was a cute easter egg.

there's a lot of more overtly erotic Giger art but usually there's something to the context that undermines it, that makes it uncomfortable to desire. it's full of people being penetrated by machines or giving birth to baby-bullets or holding up ribbed dick-cables the size of steel beams. that cover is simultaneously too sexy, and not pornographic enough.
