I'm playing through Silent Hill 1 for the first time (I've played the other ones) thinking it's not gonna compare well, but holy poo poo it's probably the scariest / oppressive one.
The soundscape is incredible. Knowing the backstory in advance makes it even better.

that reminds me of a folk tale from a "Scary Stories" book where a really scared person has to drive a stake into a grave to prevent bad fortune. They stake the grave but are immediately grabbed by the cloak when they turn to dip, and die of fright at the thought of the grave's spirit dragging them back.

They staked their clothes to the grave, naturally.

I want to play Condemned again. talking about spooky first entries, I really enjoyed the camera/locker jump scare.

Was Condemned the one with all the dead birds? Or was that FEAR?

Condemned had birds as a collectible, yes.

Not quite the same thing, but there's a chapter in The Stand which follows folks who were immune to the super flu but died in various other ways.

One old lady obsessively carries a gun to protect herself from looters. The first time she fires it, it explodes in her face and kills her.

Just finished Silent Hill. The atmosphere is incredible and I recommend immersing yourself in that world if you haven't. It got to me in a very visceral way.

It's mostly a key hunt game with bad controls, but it's not difficult at all. Use a text walkthrough to expedite the process.

I've been playing/replaying all the Armored Cores in preparation for Armored Core 6 and lmao at one of the arena fighters in Armored Core 2.

In the PS1 Armored Core 1, the final boss is Hustler 1/Nine-ball, the top Arena pilot and secretly there's like a dozen of them because they're controlled by an AI manipulating humanity. In the PS2 Armored Core 2, there's a Hustler 2 in a suspiciously similar machine. Except, all the parts are lovely garbage and the guy is full of poo poo and loses almost instantly lmao

One of the PS1 ACs also has an armored core made of wood powered by the guy pedaling or something in it according to the description. Another has a guy who takes donations for charity, but weirdly all his parts are the most expensive ones in the game. :allears:

This moment in Noita:

If you haven't played Noita, some background:

- When you get set on fire in Noita, your best way to put the fire out is to stand in some nonflammable liquid, like water or blood.
- So if you get set on fire, a common strategy is to find a little hole that you can fill with liquid from one of the flasks you're carrying.
- Certain enemies in Noita can grab and use wands.
- Wands have randomly-generated spells on them.
- One of the rarest spells is Nuke, which creates a gigantic explosion.
- Wand altars, the little plinths that the wands spawn on, are one of the few indestructible materials in the game.

So this Noita player was wandering around, killed a rat, and accidentally set themselves on fire while doing so. To put the fire out, they hopped into that little divot to the left of the wand altar. And while they were busy doing that, an enemy jumped down from above, grabbed the wand, immediately used it, and shot the nuke in it directly into the wand altar, vaporizing everything in the vicinity that wasn't exactly where the player was standing.

Hello! So glad you're enjoying the game. Going on land was, uh, not originally intended, but my options were basically "make it easy to move on land" or "scour every single map to make sure there's no way to get stuck up against the terrain" and, well, one of these is waaaaay easier than the other.

Plus, this way we get hilarious speedrun strats, and I am all about that.

I've been hooning gba Pokémon pinball 2 jruby and sapphire edition) and found a little thing. In the gbc pokemon pinball you can get the ball stuck on top of the roaming pokemon in the minigames, and they just keep getting hit which makes it real easy. In this sequel, they let the ball pass through a hit Pokémon, making it more of a skill. They counterbalance this by making the hit boxes v generous however. Gosh I love me some Pokémon pinball. It's the only Pokémon game where i actively feel I want to try to catch em all

This reminds me that originally, Ape Out was an entirely different game and "grab the enemy and throw them at other enemies to win" was a minor mechanic. They found out that it was the most fun thing to do in the game, so they reconceptualized the entire game and thus, Ape Out was born.
