Holy poo poo that spoilered comic.

Sorry, I hope the unspecificity of the spoiler didn't cause trouble. My hunch is that the comic attempted to take a shot at the hypocrisy of people who feel bad about exploitation and slavery but won't give up a luxury item because that'd be too inconvenient, but the result is... not the best.

Vesa-Matti Loiri = a famous Finnish singer and actor, died recently. He was in a bunch of classic Finnish movies and made some really good songs, but to child me he was best known for his voicework as Genie in Disney's Aladdin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjhCZHxsSlo&t=122s
Loiria = (plural) partitive of Loiri; "some Loiris" could be one translation
Koira = dog
Koiria = plural partitive of Koira; "some dogs" could be a translation
Vesa-Matti koiria = Vesa-Matti dogs
The dogs look like Loiri, and the song is a reference to "Niin hyvää puuta"/"Such good wood", a song he's (in part) famous for. The "May I" is a completely untranslatable phrase written with an accent, I assume it was something Loiri commonly said. Also I guess Loiri also played the flute at some point?

Yeah the senseless celebratory heteronormativity of this modern arc loving sucks. I get that it's supposed to be a nice thing for them to have a ceremony but instead it comes off as performative and compulsory. Not to be like RAHHHH WEDDING BAD but I dunno I guess they don't necessarily have to just have the protagonists magic them a ceremony or whatever.

It also falls into that common pattern of protagonists making decisions for everyone else that gets so unsettling in every story he writes. As for heteronormativity, are any of the major characters in Holbrook's strips LGBTQ? If the answer is no, that's interesting given how much he likes to use badly-mangled metaphors for queerness and race and such.

There's a baby coming for this couple too I'm sure. A weasel or whatever that they'll force to wear a turtle shell.

When Mikl was posting K&K, they pointed out there's one gay couple in the strip -- Rachel the rhinoceros and her horse wife Joan -- but outside of their wedding story, they almost never show up.

Also there is the pop star lady and the time traveler lady (who is also a baby presently) in Safe Havens. I can't think of any gay men in any of his strips at all as an aside, maybe this is not surprising, maybe it is.
