ESA is having a Harry Potter block and was going to not allow donation comments in support of trans rights to be read on stream because they're "political", and might still allow for a runner to declare they don't want donations like that read. idk to what degree they've backtracked on that but they remain absolutely atrocious when it comes to official communication.

So this is the one instance where I'll actually support doing what ArfJason does. Or, well, doesn't. Not doing what ArfJason doesn't? Stupid multiple negatives.

Love to hear that supporting my friends is political and therefore bad. gently caress ESA. Trans rights.

well the point being that the whole franchise is colored by jkr being a transphobe at this point so they're making their stance pretty clear imo

One of those in game status effects isn't exactly the best look in 2023, was my read into why Barkley ended up there.
there's also the Juwanna Mann stuff, which I guess to be fair is played completely straight (she's a woman, Barkley never says otherwise)

and the furry stuff, which really isn't and kind of reads worse now that we collectively know trans people exist [edit the next day: actually, I'm conflating this with some other game, the furry stuff is just jabs at furries]

honestly it could be anything, maybe Wilford Brimley's estate reached out to them with legal threats (this is a joke, I really do think it's one of the above two/the status ailments because really at least two are bad/Bill Cosby)

Apparently this is because of a hotfix run of it the other day, which led the games committee to find out about the bug porn stuff

Jesus loving christ that's so loving stupid, might as well just ban trans people from the event and change the charity to the LGB alliance, fuckin assholes.

GDQ should have a Harry Potter block and ONLY read trans rights/JKR sucks donations and just clown on her and the series during the whole thing.

i think a couple of the furry message board posts also include stuff about gender iirc? like 'i am a man but in my heart i am a female wolf' or w/e

its been ages but i remember something like that. tho yeah its weird to conflate furry and trans without elaborating

I likely was myself too. Could have sworn there was like, a man who was a proud lioness leading a pride or something. At least that game isn't lovely in that particular way!

I posted all the known details a few days ago on the previous page of the thread, but tl;dr is that it's in Minneapolis, MN starting Memorial Day weekend and they're doing a mix of online and in-person runs. The exact hotel venue is still TBD, but should be announced soon.

Also, if any goons out there are planning on submitting runs, the submission period starts this Saturday (2/25), so good luck!

DD: Fondly regard abomination.

…now I want to run a student project to improve that TAS to the theoretical minimum. (It’s metric TSP on a subgraph of a 9x9 grid, no way in hell is the standard exponential-time TSP algorithm optimal - at the very least you should be able to do something with treewidth!)

Xerol
Jan 13, 2007

My first thought is to convert the grid into a bunch of weights of the frame cost to go between each cell, since you know what digit you'd be on from that cell and what digit you'd need to go to for the next cell, so you know exactly how many frames it's going to take. Then you just run some weighted pathfinding algorithm to find the fastest route through the board.

pumpinglemma

DD: Fondly regard abomination.

Oh, that’s what they do - the problem is that finding the fastest route through the board while visiting every cell is the travelling salesman problem rather than a standard pathfinding problem, so there’s no fast general algorithm unless P = NP and they use an approximation instead. My hunch is that in this specific case you can do an exact solution significantly faster than the best general-purpose TSP algorithm, though.

You can use Cython to embed C into Python, and a lot of the big libraries like numpy do… but writing well-optimised numpy code is an absolute fucker, so yeah they could probably have saved a factor of 50 or so. Their poor computer died in vain. :(

Right???? Like doing a Harry Potter segment is pretty touchy right now but I think you could pull it off and maybe even do it really well, in a way that only bolsters one's image and serves as a message of support for the trans community. Instead, they decided to mandate that everyone literally has to pretend trans people don't exist so nobody has to feel bad or think at all about wizard games. Possibly the worst possible course of action. :lmao:

in a vacuum it don't seem all that terrible to have that on schedule perhaps but like they absolutely know what kind of audience they're courting when they put that kinda thing on there lol, they had months to consider the optics it's not like they were blindsided by it

like that's the thing that I consider, I know what kind of person that will attract in the current climate, you know and most important, they *absolutely* know. That is in fact, the point.
