christ the bitcoin landfill guy threw away the HDD in 2013 and he was still trying to get it back as of last year

on top of losing all that theoretical money he's spent a decade obsessing over it

Just like live dogs sniff out people trapped in rubble, robot dogs can sniff out a trapped drive.

back in maybe 2012 or 2013 I played satoshi dice.

I was able to dig up my old laptop hard drive and pull the keys for the .0004 parts of a bitcoin I had left.

This fuckers hard drive is loving smashed

I knew a lawyer who had like one bit coin and when get threw away the computer he drilled a hole in the hard drive.

Once when I was working in the tech shop of a store there was a guy that brought in a laptop for recycling, a few months later that person comes back asking if we still had the laptop, as there were bitcoins on it. It was gone lol

I don't know how these guys are so quick to toss out the one thing containing their magic internet money, but they are

Who throws away a drive without making sure it is completely wiped or otherwise destroyed? I would DBAN any HDDs I was giving up physical control over, or take a hammer to them or something. I also like taking them apart to salvage the rare-earth magnets - I have a couple sitting on my fridge right now for hanging poo poo on.

The complete lack of information security of just willy-nilly getting rid of a drive makes my eye twitch.

i threw away these a while back, they were in this ancient computer that i took apart 'cuz i couldn't haul the entire thing to the dumpster in one go

i have no idea what was on them. probably a bunch of porn at 1024x768 resolution or some poo poo. if someone wants to dig them out of the trash they're welcome to it, idgaf

what you do for data retention? part of the reason for me keeping my old hard drives is while i do copy documents and folders over I feel better knowing I can dig out stuff from the og drive.

Its weird looking at my making GBS threads "mp3" folder from 1999 though. But hearing "dope show" on winamp just takes me back yo

I was at the local landfill and I noticed a battered laptop that one of the dump attendants/chaperones had fished out of the pile. Asked him if I could take it and he said yea. Took out the hard drive and powered it up and it had a whole bunch of Navy schedules and regulations and stuff. Looked like it belonged to a Navy dude who did something electronics or comms related and there were a bunch of spreadsheets listing different ships and outage times when stuff would be down for maintenance.

There were also gigs of very meat and potatoes rock music(Skillet, Disturbed etc) on it.

"Smart" contracts have to be enforceable by twiddling bits, which is a "benefit" of stable coins: if the blockchain says you own 1BUSD you own 1BUSD. Real money and banks honor poo poo like court orders and reverse transactions that are fraudulent.

Also you can spit out stablecoins with no backing and the secret service doesn't come after you.

Additionally, for some strange reason exchanges have a hard time getting bank accounts, so they can't cash out your coins in to real money, so they have stable coins that are supposed to always be worth a dollar so you can take them to an exchange that for the moment does actually have a bank account.

Of course, if the people who made the stable coins could just print millions of them at a time with no oversight that would be bad, but

Its kinda smart be two steps removed from crypto and only trade in telephone minutes, or that thing in japan where your not gambiling your just buying a token and some shop down the road will buy that token from you.

I kind of wonder why anyone even bothered with algorithmic stable coins. If you think other stable coins are actually backed up by real assets, you're stupid even by crypto standards.
