Lower Decks first few episodes are REALLY loving rough. Once it finds it footing, it levels out significantly, and only Mariner retains the "talking like a normal, modern person who's watched Star Trek finding themselves within the Star Trek world would" quirk.

Also gonna N'th what other folks have said about Stargate: Atlantis, it's not really good, but it IS fun and rad as poo poo and worth watching, especially for the seasons Picardo's on it as a main cast member.

Yeah I was going to ask a similar question about whether I should stick with Lower Decks after the first episode and a half. When I thought about posting the question I realized I'd watched the entire first season in one go.

Some of it still definitely feels like a 2006 era "it's a cartoon...FOR ADULTS!!1!" but yeah it improves. And I'm saying that as someone who isn't really into the Trek overall. (That said I've watched all of Picard, TNG, and the TNG era movies now. I think there's something wrong with my brain.)

By the third season, Lower Decks is just making great regular Trek with some jokes. Hell, Reflections veers close to being a straight drama.

Yeah, Lower Decks has a heart and soul and a vast amount of respect for not just its audience, but its story universe and characters, which is something that shows like Picard and Discovery are absolutely bereft of. It's the same with Strange New Worlds and Prodigy, all three shows respect your time and intelligence. Picard is just trying to work a con on you to get the folks behind it a paycheck.

Lower Decks is the kind of show that I, someone who's been a fan of Star Trek for 30 years, would make in order to express both my love for and my gentle frustrations with All Of Star Trek.

Didn't Early TNG have a bunch of super old dudes as admirals? Not even like regular old dudes like the ones who got the bug/worm/thing and tried to take over Starfleet, but dudes that they had to cake in bad age makeup like Bones and that admiral or got some anti-aging serum for him and his wife, then chugged it all?

The way McCoy keeps calling Data "boy" is a little off-putting.

I'm ok with this. It was a great plot hook, early on, that was never explored.

Prodigy goes from "Babby's First Star Trek" to "holy gently caress this show is legitimately amazing and whips the pants off Picard so hard the pants no longer exist." Within the span of about 5 episodes, maybe even quicker.

It’s a baby show in the sense that there is an overt moral lesson that usually falls under “trust in your friends” or “it’s important to talk about your feelings instead of using violence” but if we’re honest that’s what TNG was about too

It's starts out as straight up Star Wars bait, but over a couple episodes shows (not tells) why Star Trek is good too. Then it gets real good at being Star Trek.

I've said it in a couple of places, but both Prodigy and Lower Decks are a pair of Star Trek shows that are built on love for Star Trek, just from two different perspectives. Lower Decks is a show that loves Star Trek from the perspective of someone who's been a fan for decades and knows it well enough to make fun of how silly it is without straying into meanspiritedness. Meanwhile Prodigy is a show from the perspective of someone who has just today found out what Star Trek is and has fallen in love with it and wants to learn everything about it as fast as possible in order to be true fan of it.

Picard meanwhile, is a show that has nothing but spite for Star Trek and hates you for still somehow sticking around and loving Star Trek 30 years after TNG went off the air.

Funny you should say that. I watched few minutes of a horror film called Pin a few nights ago and while trying to find out the name of the movie I had to wait for the credits. David Hewlett... Okay. What? No... That's...

Yep, same David Hewlett and I'm not going to lie, I didn't recognize him. He had a real early-00s Justin Timberlake look to him as a younger man.

I watched a random Canadian sci fi movie from 2015 on Amazon that had Jason Mamoa in it and I couldn't figure out why. Then I saw it, writer and director David Hewlett. Also a small part for his sister in there.

This interview was interesting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnySfN02YYQ

The first minute fifteen is the showrunner and Frakes basically saying that of course Picard isn’t like TNG because TNG was episodic and thoughtful which is more like SNW. Also I don’t think Dorn knows they revamped the Klingons because when he’s asked if there was a discussion about making Worf look like Klingons do now he seems to think he’s being asked about Worf’s hairstyle.

Makes perfect sense. Why would Michael Dorn watch a star trek he isn't even in when he could be flying one of his jet planes instead?

I didn’t mean I don’t think he watched ST, I meant that I would have assumed there’d be some overlap between Disco & Picard from a makeup standpoint like shared artists and appliances or media and that he would have at least seen what Klingons look like now. Like none of these dudes watch ST of course not.
