Plan B: Terraform

quote:

Terraform a lifeless rock into a lush and habitable world. Build trucks, trains and sprawling factories on an enormous hexagonal planet. Grow its population to millions. Enjoy a dynamic simulation of atmosphere, temperature, water and forests.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95PxMff073Y

Some of you may have spotted this on the Demo game thing that Steam had a few days ago. I gotta say I really enjoyed the demo and the game itself also seems pretty good. General premise is that you are both colonising and terraforming a mars-like planet over the course of several years by building factories and creating supply chains. Unlike other games, power is not an issue and it's mostly just about supply and demand, I don't think there is a fail state either so It's pretty chill. You also get to watch as your city (or cities depending on how busy you want to get) as well as the planet progress as you slowly unlock more technology and build more factories. It's in early access so things like the game's story is not quite there yet, but I do believe it is still "completable" in it's current form.

Ratings are currently "Very positive".

I'm going to drown! For no reason at all!

I didn’t find the Plan B Terraform demo revolutionary in any mechanical sense, but as a vibes kind of game I was super into it. Easy buy for only $9 - the dev(I think singular? Or at least mostly one guy) seems super involved too so maybe some of that mechanics stuff gets fleshed out more in the end, too.

No reviews on Steam yet, average score from magazine reviews in 1998 through MobyRank puts it at around 73/100. It's an Elite/Privateer inspired game, has a bit of cult following. No idea exactly how well this release runs on a modern system, but it was surprising seeing it turn up out of the blue.

No idea how well it holds up today, but I remember absolutely loving this when it came out. I think it was around the era of Wipeout, and they did the whole "license a bunch of actually quite legit electronic music for the soundtrack" thing. I guess it might be a bit simplistic now but as a time capsule of late 90s cyber aesthetics, you know, the stuff that's coming back ironically, it might have looped around and be cool again, especially at a budget price.

StS is more a full on rogue-like, which while many are into, but it felt too random for me.

pretty big map with set enemies and upgrade hubs makes me feel I have a lot more control, and the RNG is just the cards I pick up for the deck itself. Along with map specific challenges, it feels more like a complete package.

I've played it for a few days and it's good. Great music too.

I had to run it on the hardest difficulty though to compensate for some of the minion combos being absolutely busted. Busted a good way, it's fun when you get a snake that just won't stop.

Yeah, I went ahead and spent the $10 - and it's fun. A bit simple for my liking, but runs are quick, and playing around with combos has been fun so far. Definitely worth the money, but I can't see myself putting more than 10 hours into it
