If a cow produces too much methane why don't people talk about wild buffalo, elk, and elephants. These are walking bags of methane! Should we not keep them in check? Where I live the deer out populate the humans. All they do is produce greenhouse gases. And not a word from greta..

Big game hunting and outdoor activities are not only carbon neutral but carbon negative. While you are in the outdoors you are foraging which removes carbon from the environment. This is good. The average hunter removing carbon from the forest and stopping methane creators is arguably doing more than greta thunberg has ever done for the planet. We should all be hunting and foraging a large portion of our consumed foods in order to give the middle finger to mass production i.e. capitalist farming. Support your small farmers.

Support the amish.

This brings us to another point. The amish. If you want to protect the environment become amish. All climate activists should be living otg as do the amish. Yet they are demonized and attacked as a luddite cult. But no, they live carbon negative lifestyles. Hmm. Maybe we should have more people living with less plastics and mass produced consumer products. It almost seems like the amish are more socialist than any bourgeois antifa member with an oxbridge education.

Dont be carbon neutral. Be carbon negative.

You're kind of missing the psychological aspect of recycling too. People like to feel like they are contributing or doing something right, or helping or doing their bit. When someone recycles they can feel good about it or tell themselves that they are helping. It gives a feeling of control on an incontrollable thing. Someone going "well akshully...." to people recycling might as well be telling people that nothing they do is worth anything and they should just fall into a nihilistic void of depression and despair

We have these two- and three-receptacle bins on the sidewalks in Toronto. Garbage in the left hole, two kinds of recycling on the other. (They also have a cigarette butt receptacle that's practically invisible and I'm the only smoker I know who ever uses one anyway)

The other night I was working a security gig at a bar, and I watched as the garbage truck pulled up, guy got out, pulled the bins out and just poured them all into one before dumping it in his (also just one single receptacle) truck.

It really bummed me out, especially thinking about it afterwards, how I was brought up by compassionate parents and always taught to Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle, and it's probably been a farce the whole time. Worse yet, I was thinking about how selling one more blue bin to households to separate their trash might have just been a ploy to make the plastic companies more dosh. :(

Starbucks around here have two hole waste receptacles, bottles and cans on one side, everything else on the other. And the Starbucks I worked at actually contracted with a sanitation service that recycled, we had separate dumpsters for garbage, bottles and cans, cardboard, and milk jugs (a Starbucks goes through a huge amount of cardboard boxes and milk jugs.) But we never used the bottles and cans dumpster, customers always just put all of their garbage in one receptacle, we never got a bag of just bottles and cans.

Then I moved and worked at a different store. They still had the separate trash receptacles, but they only had one dumpster, everything got put together. This location was also absolutely filthy, nothing got cleaned up to standard, or even close to standard, unless I or 1 other employee did it (and we were always scheduled for the morning, so most cleaning tasks were too late for us to do.) Then I got fired.

Garbage trucks in Taiwan play classical music. They're pretty serious about recycling too, considering in the 90s it had the nickname "garbage island". Different categories of recyclables get picked up on different days. Driving past the truck on a scooter and winging a bag in, without stopping, is perfectly acceptable

I can't hear Für Elise in any kind of context anymore without taking a beat to remember if I took the trash out or not

Yeah, not to mention that's not how federal authorities like DOT and EPA work. They don't only get involved if the locals ask or say they can. It's a violation of federal law not to immediately contact them when releases like this happen, and the agencies can opt to let local authorities manage the situation.

The dems are the ones playing into republican hands by doing nothing but sending sternly worded letters to the CEO of this rail company while there are photos circulating with the secretary of transportation being friendly with the rear end in a top hat. Hell, if my company doesn't pay the proper taxes or account for every drop of alcohol at one of our sites the Feds can and will show up and physically take control of the facility.

The very least Biden should have done is fired Pete/had Pete resign over this if we're talking optics and not actually helping the folks on the ground or making the responsible company feel pain.

If the only meat people ate was what people either personally hunted or a gift from friends or family and we completely ended the commercial meat industry, that would probably be a net positive in terms of climate change.
