The Asus zenphone 9 is 5.9"
Samsung A series has a few around 6"
Pixel 6a is 6.1"

You can't really get smaller than that anymore.

The problem with that is in Europe at least no one calls or text with SMS anymore. Its all done with messaging apps.

So outside of an emergency phone, it's basically useless to communicate, otherwise I'd strongly consider it.

I don't know much about phones and software design for them but is there something that prevents a flip style phone where the lower half is a physical keyboard from running say whatsapp?

I did get my latest SMS today however. It's rarely what I would use for messaging someone, but official stuff and notifications from the postal office comes via SMS often.

...

But men don't carry purses. My problem with my pixel 6 pro isn't using it; it's having the drat thing in my pocket. I have jeans where it's uncomfortable to sit with it in a side pocket. Hell, I have cargo pants where I can't get the flap closed because the phone is too big. I don't know what I'd do if one day all men's pants started being designed by the psychopaths who design women's clothes.

Honestly, I think it's one of those weird things where it's not how many people want it; it's how bad they want it. There are enough features high enough up the priority list that it masks size demand.

I did read somewhere that some of the reason is the race to make them more and more powerful. Squeezing all that power is harder and more expensive than slapping on a slightly more expensive bigger screen and calling it a day. So the larger phones end up having bigger profit margins.

As an average sized 6ft0 adult male I find most phones just barely usable these days due to their excessive size. I don't want to have to use two hands with a phone if I'm not texting, or have one that doesn't fit in a jeans pocket.

I have no idea how kids and women in general, or people with a smaller average human size like parts of South-East Asia, manage. 6.5"+ screens shouldn't be the standard, but that seems to be where we're heading.

I remember reading research about why companies but especially Apple are adopting big phones over small ones is that the larger the screen the more you look at it, to play games, watch tv, whatever. Big phones drive more screen time in general, which is good for Apple because then you buy more apps or watch more Apple TV+, etc.

It’s why I got a mini for my current phone as I was trying to reduce my screen time. It may be less their hardware margins and more that they see the minis reduce earnings on their real money maker, which is engagement with apps.

The stupidest thing is that size creep with phones is also sort of lovely (albeit in a lesser way) for men too. Having clothing with functional pockets is great, except as phones get bigger they don't actually fit in a lot of the pockets any more (especially if it's clothing that was fancy enough to have a dedicated phone pocket). I've got a few old jackets that I've had since before smartphones were as big, and one of them is a field jacket style with lots of pockets, but there's not one that will actually fit my current smartphone.

My backpacking pack has a dedicated waterproof pocket for electronics on the hip belt, and a phone hasn't fit in it since the phone I owned when I bought the pack.

A smaller, but thicker phone to fit the circuitry and more battery would be fine by me, they don't need to be that thin IMO.

I need to check out what's actually avilable but I wouldn't be entirely opposed to a flip phone with a real, physical keyboard. I have a an actual Nokia 1610 btw here in my office.

If I didn't really like the cameras on my 21 Ultra, I'd probably consider the Flip or that Razr that came out a few years back.

Now that I have a decent point-and-shoot and a good high-end camera, though, I'm probably going to switch once I run this into the ground.

I think the big thing is that mobile gaming never broke out in any major graphics-and-processor intensive way, so there's just no reason to have a wicked-high-end SoC anymore, unless you're super into playing LoL: Wild Rift.

The phones need to be thin so when you put on the case to protect your thin phone from being damaged because it is so thin it isn't too thick.

Also, gently caress apple for the camera bump. What a stupid loving idea that was.

First things first: I know I'm an idiot, Facebook is not a storage platform, they shouldn't be the only place I have certain photos. I have all my photos back to 2014 backed up as they're linked to my Google Photos account, but everything before then isn't. I kept saying I should go back and back them up, but didn't. They're not like wedding photos or last photos of grandparents or anything, but they're still nice memories that I'd rather have back than not.

Anyway: logged on last Saturday to look at some old photos, & noticed that two albums (about 50-100 photos each) from the early days of my relationship with my wife were completely gone from Facebook. A third album is still there, with a note saying it contains 152 items, but I can't see any of them:

I read a bunch of advice sites saying, wait 72 hours. Did, nothing came up.

So first of all, I hope you and your wife learned your lesson about not having backups. Sadly most people don't even after losing all their poo poo.

Second, have you tried doing the facebook take-out or whatever it's called? There should be an option somewhere to "request my data" and in theory they must give you all the data they have saved associated with your account. Request your data and wait a few days for it to generate and if it's not in there you're probably SOL.

Third, iirc there's a working backdoor to get a live support person: you have to buy their stupid VR headset but you can return it when you're done.

Searched help center for "album missing", "album disappeared" etc, but I just keep getting articles about rule violations, which isn't the case here unless photos of a hiking weekend are against the rules.

Tried writing to Facebook support on Twitter, got no official response but a LOT of "go to Instagram page XYZ & they can restore" spam.

Have tried a bunch of their Facebook's corporate emails etc but no response. Tried submitting "there's a problem", with no response.

Suddenly realised: all the missing photos were uploaded by Bloom uploader. Everything else is fine. Wondering if that's got something to do with it somehow? Sounds like the type of horseshit that could happen in this digital hell.

My wife's really upset as these were the only copies of these photos we had. I had no idea that Facebook has exactly 0 live support. Found some online communities of people getting stalked/death threats, with no realistic way to contact FB directly. Might do the "Meta paid subscription" for a month to get them back.

ANYWAY: as part of all this & trying to think of ways to get my photos back (any recommendations highly appreciated btw), I went and dug out my old devices, and: my god was the Nexus 5/7 combo amazing in terms of form factor.

I've got a One+ 6 currently (should probably update), and it's both too big to use as a phone & too small to use as a tablet. I was much happier having a small phone in my pocket & a tablet in my bag.

I'll tell you one large demographic who wants smaller phones btw: people with smaller hands. Ladies and children for starters. I have big hands with long skeleton fingers, and I can JUST about reach all corners of the screen with one hand. My wife hates her 6+ & wishes she could go back to the 5.

Any recommendations for non-poo poo battery life 5-inch phones? That's why we left the Nexus, could barely hold a charge.

Hell yeah, Nexus 5 crew represent

Camera bumps exist on every (non-minimum camera) phone. There is only so much physics fuckery you can do to reduce the size of the lens. Since taking photos is one of the primary things people use phones for, I don’t think you will see dissapearance of camera bumps any time soon.

I’m pretty sure Apple was the first to decide to make the phone thinner than the camera assembly instead of having it be flush; when the iPhone 6 came out there was some controversy because they photoshopped the then-novel bump out of all the hero shots. And the market being what it is, once Apple did it everyone else copied them and now almost every smartphone is a horrific lumpy mess.

Just make the top of the phones a bit thicker! :argh:

E: OK I re-read the article and it does say Apple wasn’t the first :downs: but Apple doing it certainly sent the signal that “this is OK for everyone to do”, same as removing the headphone jack

Cause it dawns on me just how silly it is that people can get texts from random numbers pretending to be UPS, Fedex, etc -and obviously it's annoying me that there seems to be more concern about stopping online anonymity for dumb puritanical (and probably more insidious reasons too) then there seems to be any effort being made to curb phone/text scamming.

Common carrier and other regulations including interoperability requirements for actual phone calls from phone numbers make some of these things difficult. To be clear I’m not saying regulation is wrong, just that the world wide phone system is not designed to handle these kinds of issues. For example, even if one carrier implemented something a carrier they’re required to peer with may not and there’s a back door.

As an example, for sometime a lot of spoofing was originating from carriers in Eastern Europe and Russia.

The nature of the telephone system is slowly but steadily changing. POTS may actually disappear soon, but there’s still minor pushback to allowing landline carriers to only operate via VoIP.
