Regarde Aduck posted:as a dumb brit the amount of battles where i think we did well is like... pegasus bridge, certain parts of market garden, ummm... we got our beaches at Normandy without much trouble... I guess we did ok in Africa overall Operation Plunder, the Liri Valley campaign, the Adriatic Coast, the Race to Messina, Heraklion, the Counterattack at Arras, the Capture of Hamburg, the Great Swan, Falaise, the Iraq and Syria campaigns, East Africa, holding the beachheads at Anzio and Salerno, Cassino. Imphal and Kohima are probably the greatest feat of British (and Indian and African) arms in history, but those were no small achievements either. e: not organized by chronology or geography Frosted Flake has issued a correction as of 23:08 on Feb 24, 2023 |

Ardennes posted:I am not that surprised, more than Ukrainian war goals, the US has been looking to kick the Russians out of Sevastopol for quite a while, and it really seems like all the arms they are building up are for it. It is a bit of uphill battle. Haven't US generals been saying that seizing Crimea is not possible for the Ukrainian army? Even if we give them a gimme on knocking out the bridge and seizing Melitopol Ukraine would still have to essentially do an amphibious assault and win a protracted siege without controlling the sea or air (and without much artillery or armored vehicles by then, for that matter). The West would need to hand them a navy, air force, and a field army's worth of materiel.

Slim Jim Pickens posted:Monte Cassino was captured by Moroccans and Poles lol Well, the reason is interesting at least. Almost to a man, the British (and Canadian, and Australian) leadership had been junior officers in the Great War and, after experiencing the Somme, made avoiding casualties their focus in the next war. This was a big reason for the methodical nature of planning, complex fire plans and barrages, intricate timetables. They largely succeeded, despite the infantry replacement shortage in 1945. In one possible parallel here, when the 7th Armoured Division was sent to Normandy it was probably the most experienced unit in the British Army. Because it was the most experienced unit in the British Army, they absolutely refused to take risks. These guys had soldiered all the way from the Egyptian frontier, they were not about to get killed when it seemed the war was just about over. This led to Monty firing nearly all of their commanders and staff, but for the remainder 7 AD tankers were more cautious than dashing, preferring to stand off and shoot the enemy off the target rather than boldly going forth. Very boring, but it got the job done.
