You could probably take any of even the worst late-season plots and have made them great with a team of engaged, passionate and funny writers. I think the earliest episode I remember feeling was just not great was the one where Lisa is trying to go to the museum and gets lost. I can't really pinpoint what's wrong with it but it's the first I remember knowing in reruns I wasn't going to have as much fun watching.

An earlier episode that feels entirely out of place is Season 7’s “Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming”. Something about that episode is just off, like someone wrote it who never watched Simpsons regularly. It’s the one where Sideshow Bob tries to nuke Springfield. Edit: Maybe that’s exactly what it was: quote:The episode was written by freelance writer Spike Feresten, and features the fifth major appearance of Sideshow Bob. Although Feresten received credit for the episode, the writing staff completely rewrote the episode and very little of Feresten's original script was left in the finished version. It was the first episode of The Simpsons to be directed by Dominic Polcino, who described it as being very difficult to direct. R. Lee Ermey, known for his role in Full Metal Jacket, guest stars as Col. Leslie "Hap" Hapablap while Kelsey Grammer reprises his role as Sideshow Bob.

Oh god, the jockeys episode. That was the first time I got to the end of a Simpsons and went "that was utterly poo poo." Probably coincided with the rise of non sequitur lazy endings where they couldn't be bothered to wrap up the story, and mean-spirited violence (mostly against Homer).

I skimmed through the seasons to see when I dropped off, and I recognized less and less eps until season 20 where they were all unfamiliar. It took a lot longer than I thought to hit that point though! I would have said 14 or so

Does the casino episode count as one of the more out-there episode premises? It's definitely got one of the more rear end-pull plot elements (Marge developing a gambling addiction out of nowhere) but it still works structurally.

I had kind of lost interest in the show by then but when I had watched this it hit me hard. I never liked that whole wacky random humor trend from the 2000s and when I saw Tomacco I just felt 'huh, this sucks, I guess I've just outgrown this show'. Around that time I had lost interest in a lot of shows from my youth so it seemed to just be a casualty of that, I didn't really think of it as the show itself getting much worse.

You guys are weak, I watched every new episode religiously, live as it aired, up to Sunday, January 27, 2008 when a little episode called That 90's Show aired. 15 years later I can still remember how visceral my "gently caress this poo poo!" reaction was. I still watched new Simpsons after that, and I still do, but with a much more casual attitude. Sort of like I'll get to it when I get to it and if I miss an episode here or there ehhh whatever. Don't think I've actually watched more than 5 episodes live as they aired since that fateful January day.

The billboard with Sonic proposing to Amy gives one of those terrible nerd twinges. It's not at all glamorous or even that interesting, but she just gets caught up in the cycle, and I can see Marge not having indulged in it before when she simply didn't have the opportunity. ...also something very ouch about Marge saying she should get professional help and Homer saying that's too expensive. (He's probably right)

I don't know why, but being reminded of the episode annoys me purely from Tom Scott saying that that episode was the first appearance of 'Jingle Bells Batman Smells'. It was in the loving first episode, you pommy wanker!  But yes, Goulets cameo and rendition ofnthat song was perfect.
