We have a regularly visiting hen sparrowhawk. She's pretty much unphotographable, since she's either a hunched shadow lurking in a tree, or and insanely fast blur dodging in the 10 inches between me and my front door. We used to have a regular visiting group of about 12 ring neck doves, but over the course of about a year, she ate them all. We knew it was her because we'd always find the snipped-off wings on the ground nearby. Why waste energy carrying inedible, un-aerodynamic dead wings, when you can snip them off and just take the carcass. She's flown behind me a load of times, through tiny gaps, and she's not even slightly bothered.
Her child, though, is a very special one.
He/She spent a good half hour running up and down on top of this hedge trying to convince the sparrows within to climb out and be eaten

Humor aside, it was interesting to see that they absolutely have to learn how to hunt successfully. That chick tried to hunt a flock of starlings who were well aware of where it was, and had retreated to a bramble thicket. I swear the starlings were shouting rude remarks at the increasingly frustrated baby sparrowhawk.

Where my brother lives, he sees plenty of ptarmigans and they just give no shits and will approach him and his kid non-aggressively. Whiskeyjacks/Grey Jays will also chill with and sometimes on you.
