If they're working from the camera raw (or even intermediates with lower compression), upres'ing HD footage from the Thomson Viper to UHD can look amazing (i.e. Collateral, the new UHD looks amazing and the movie looks the best it's ever looked). EDIT: Except for the Sony CineAlta F900. Oof, footage from that camera is cursed but still looks pretty drat good on Collateral, so I have hope. I got some DVDs at Half Price Books and just sat down to watch one, High Kick Girl. It has the original Japanese version and an English dub, but no subtitles or closed captions of any kind for either. This is the first time I’ve encountered this. I’ve seen Japanese with hardsubs plenty of times, sometimes the Japanese companies would sometimes require that to discourage reverse importation. Including the original version without subs, without even dubtitles, is baffling.

Instead of the terribly dubbed High Kick Girl, I watched the next movie in the Years of Lead box. It’s about a cop who keeps getting into high speed chases and crashing because he’s not a good driver. His stupid bitch boss keeps yelling at him to stop doing chases just because he keeps crashing and injuring himself because he sucks at driving. The Italians are an amazing people.

With a few exceptions, almost entirely westerns, I can’t loving stand Italian movies. Especially stuff from the 70s-80s, it’s all just ripoffs of other better films or total nonsense where things just happen at random. People will talk about certain giallo films as being masterpieces of the horror or thriller genres and I feel genuinely dumbstruck as to how anyone can enjoy them as movies in a technical sense.
