imo skinny ape, cracker island and especially silent running are some of the best songs in their entire catalog, though in the case of silent running that's partly because i'm very easily taken in by soulful wailing background vocals

Yeah there seems to be a consensus that there’s 3 (maybe 4) good tracks on the album and the rest are phoned in.

It's a piece of JUNK!
I'll be the thread outlier and say this is possibly the strongest sets of songs they've ever done. It doesn't have the trademark Gorillaz feel of a huge hodgepodge of different guest stars contributing a variety of sounds, but the songwriting itself is top tier.

Sorry for the double post, but I only realized a few hours ago that I totally missed the new US Girls album coming out last week. So far I've mostly only been really into one of their albums (A Poem Unlimited) and they're all pretty different and artsy, so I wasn't sure what to expect. And the jury's still out, but holy crap this has some serious bangers. They're sort of playing in that late '70s early '80s disco/funk/fusion zone, a little Steely Danny, at least on a few songs. And then other songs are totally different, so it's a little hard to peg (heh) down.

This is also surely the first time I've heard a breast pump sampled as a rhythm instrument (on the appropriately titled "Pump" and also the following track)

Half the US Girls album left me a bit cold, but the other half is great so I reckon it averages out to be Pretty Good, Yeah.

Jen Cloher's new album is out today, and it's absolutely beautiful. It emotionally devastated me for personal reasons, and while it might not resonate quite so hard if you haven't also spent the last year grappling with your own alienation from your whakapapa (not to get too E/N about it all, haha), it's definitely still worth your time.

The new Yo La Tengo album is the best they've done in 15 years, as good as ICHTHBAS and Electr-O-Pura.

New Brian Jonestown Massacre is also insanely good, a career best

Really surprised at how good both are

Fever Ray's Radical Romantics released on Friday and it's good. Definitely strong The Knife vibes on the first half of it, unsurprising with Olof Dreijer featuring.

Not a fan of the vocal melodies on the first listen imo. Like the subject matter tho. Hopefully it’ll grow on me, the first Fever Ray album is an all time fav.

I think this is it... I think this is how it ends
No idea where to put this, but I put on Ash's '1977' for the first time in almost a decade and what a loving mess of production it is. I can't hear the bass, there's barely any room for any drums except the snare and Tim's vocals just seem to drift in and out of the mix. I think I've just gotten used to modern records having better production and mastering than the mid 90s

Part of it is that they were borrowing a lot from Oasis's handbook. So it has this very blown out sound, with a lot of reverb and compression. Tim also wasn't the greatest singer with a pretty weak voice.

But you know what? Girl from Mars, Goldfinger, and Kung Fu - great songs. Although the production works really well on Kung Fu.

I think the reverb heavy vibe works for Kung Fu, but I think the two best sounding tracks on the album are ones that weren't mixed by Owen Morris in Girl From Mars and Angel Interceptor. I'd also kill for a remixed album that strips away all of his bullshit
