I found some 8 Track cartridges in a vintage shop and decided to see if the 8 track player in my car worked. Would you know? It works fine. Even sounds quite good! There's something appealing about the simplicity of the format. There isn't even a power button. The only control is the cartridge and whether it's inserted or not. If it's in the player, it's playing. If it's not, it's not. I think I'll get some more carts.

A couple of decades ago I decided to try out the 8 track player and carts that were in my basement. 70's-80's vintage. The tape on 4/5 carts instantly snapped and I gave up. They did not hold up well after a couple of decades in random basements. The player worked fine though.

8 track players only have a metal capstan that spins. When you jam a tape into the player it lodges the captstan against a rubber wheel inside the cart and the tape is caught between the capstan and the wheel. As the tape is pulled through it spools itself back onto a reel in the middle of the cartridge and then feeds itself out of the middle of the reel to make an endless loop. The 3 things that cause issues are 1. Crap gets built up on the metal capstan wheel 2. The foam that is in the catridge that keeps the tape pressed against the head crumbles apart 3. The tape gets moldy or the powdered lubricant that lets it slip fails and the tape starts binding 1 and 2 are easy fixes, try cleaning the capstan and put a piece of weather stripping in the cart to replace the foam.

iirc this thing was supposed to be a Video Toaster/video production controller. I googled and apparently it's the control board from an Ampex VR1200 Video Recorder I'm not sure about the keyboard attached to it. edit: I missed that this post was in reference to the new CRD video.

Adding to this that if the tape 'breaks', it's most likely that the glue from the splice with the switching tape has gone bad. The fix is to re-splice it, some replace the whole aluminium switching strip with something else. If the tape is otherwise in good shape, it's worth splicing it back together.

It’s the language of choice for the ridiculous database we use for our web app back end (UNIDATA) Given that my days with Pick were in the early 90s and people were accessing the system via dumb terminals over rs232, the thought of using it for a web application is mind boggling to me. (Not in a negative way but just that it's so different and modern compared to how we used it!) Luckily I've long since forgotten how to create a group format error, I can still remember a bit of reverse polish notation from creating dictionary items though!
