mental health boom is good because a LOT of people have trauma that has profoundly affected their lives and refuses to seek help for it or recognize it or fix it, in part due to the compounding affects of coping with trauma

while some people are experiencing depression or anxiety solely due to material conditions there's a ton of people who want to just blanket say that most of therapy is dealing with people who are sad or anxious because capitalism sucks and if we just implement fully automated gay communism now most people wouldn't need therapy . while people would probably need LESS therapy the constant refrain of "therapy can't fix capitalism" strikes me as the standard leftist pastime of minimizing anything that isn't class struggle "oh when we fix capitalism we'll fix race so stop distracting us from our goal, minority leftists, your problems will be solved"

like sure being poor cna be traumatic and you can deal with that by doing therapy and taking some drugs because it hosed you up

also you can be molested by some toxic patriarchal or leadership figure and that cna gently caress you up

or you saw your sister die in front of you

I don't know, lots of peopel can benefit from therapy but you need a good therapist, and you need to be in an emotional place where you can do work and for sure capitalism can sometime preclude that

Talking to someone is a key component. Current state of society leaves therapy as the only way for some people to fulfill this requirement. That does not make therapy good. I personally found bar culture back in my 20s was far more enlightening and restorative than the therapy I receive in my 30s. About same costs too. It is very convenient and if you find a good human being to create long term relationship then good for you, I wish you no ill.

also the US is awesome about who can do what

like in CA there's like 4 non-MD titles that can do therapy and the'yre all fairly similar in qualifications

but in other states there's vast differences between say a LCSW and LMFT

I will concede that Therapist are somewhere between Physical Therapist and Acupuncturist in this metaphor spawned from the depiction of a profession explored in a 2000s era prestige mob show.

Weirdest part of season 3 was Tony dating and then killing Pepper Ann from Disney's Pepper Ann for sure but I guess after Nancy Marchand died they were kinda scrambling to figure out what the show was gonna be.

i remember going to see bakshi talk at dragoncon about 11 years ago. it was interesting, but the story that sticks out most in my mind is how he started out as a line animator at some studio and wanted to advance, but the union said he didn't have the seniority. so he picked up his desk and carried it upstairs and wedged it in between two others and just started grabbing work to do, which lead to the other animators getting pissed at him. it could have been old man hyperbole or bullshit, but the message seemed to be "gently caress unions" and that rubbed me the wrong way

his movies are dope tho
bakshi owns. the message was probably less "gently caress unions", more that he inhabits his own universe with its own strange laws and has got away with a lot just by absolutely perplexing everyone around him

What kind of analysis?

The stereotypical Freudian analysis that people think about was done multiple times a week. The idea is that the analyst acts as a partner to help the patient explore their conscious thoughts in a way that might help uncover subconscious pathologies. By unearthing that pathology and making the patient conscious of it, the patient will then have the tools to address that pathology and get better.

Because it's basically trying to do a deep dive into the mind and it isn't the analyst trying to force a set perspective or values on someone, it takes a lot of time. Because the patient needs to take a lot of time and insurance companies don't like covering more than one session a week unless someone's really, really sick, you usually need to pay a lot of money.

I'm pretty sure each school of therapy has its own idea of what constitutes "analysis" though. Most cognitive behavioral therapy regimens are less time consuming, but many patients feel that even once a week can be inconvenient and expensive. Different institutes also have different definitions of what constitutes analysis. Some of the more traditional ones still insist it has to be at least 3 times a week while others are much less stringent.

https://simplypsychology.org/psychoanalysis.html

Whatever Tony does in the Sopranos is not analysis.
