I went on a ride today with a cycling buddy. On our way home, we ran into another friend of ours, and we joined them and rode for another 10 km more before turning back. It's nice when you form a wolfpack like that because once there's more than one of you, you can start blocking off large sections of the bike lane to discourage cars from entering it, you can ride side-by-side to claim an entire lane to yourself when a bike lane isn't available, you can more safely cross intersections as a group, and so on.

Police chases are something a lot of countries have stopped permitted specifically because it results in far more people being killed than saved even in theory, so of course it's part of our culture here

A few years back, the local cops chased a guy doing 60 in a 25 through a crowded narrow downtown while school was letting out. An officer who was filling in for a crossing guard decided to take a few shots at the pursued vehicle??? I can't even link an article if I wanted to dox my location because the local government and cops covered that poo poo up immediately. One of my family members was a part of the council that did the cover-up and both he and my father adamantly argued that the guy firing shots was making the right decision. The right decision they had to cover up. The only satisfaction I got out of this was that right after this conversation, the owner of the local pub walked up and went off about how lovely the cops were for shooting at a moving vehicle while kids were walking home from school and my family meekly agreed with him because they're cowards. Yeah, of course I'm in America. New Jersey, even! Cars are so bad.
