My favourite thing about Crimea is the Ukrainians with Neo-Pagan tattoos talking about the wonderful Muslim culture the evil Rus colonists suppressed through doing an Imperialism or whatever, while also gloating about their plans to ethnically cleanse the peninsula of Russian speakers and Orthodox. Nazis playing to an international audience of western liberals produces bizarre results.

I recently dug up a nationalisms textbook from 2005 that I have and read the section on Ukraine and it really is a nation cobbled together with gum and duct tape. Not that there is anything wrong with that as long as it works, but the tension between the ethnic nationalism of Western Ukraine based on language and the territorial national identity of Eastern Ukraine (more in effect rather than as an ideology perhaps?) resulting in political instability seems inevitable in hindsight. Also the the dynamic between the two seems such that it favoured the ethnic nationalists in that they sought to centralise political power and then use it to enact their vision on the whole country as opposed to de-centralising power so that the regions can run their own affairs and express themselves however they want in terms of language, religion, culture. In effect one part of the country sought power and to use it and the other wanted give it up. Furthermore the extremists in the west were just more extreme about it whereas the extremists in the east would have been separatist thereby undermining their political cause as part of Ukraine. It's hard to imagine any other context where European liberals fashioning themselves as post-nationalists or detesting nationalism would take up the cause of ethnic nationalism opposed to a more civic nationalist identity except here it aligns with their nationalist animosity with Russia that they don't recognise as existing because it's just the truth.
