I think it makes sense in a fictional sport for the fictional competitors to sometimes appear in other promotions tbh, and you don't need an explanation other than "they're a competitor from another promotion". The 60 year old podcasters who take issue with this would be the first ones to cry and moan if someone they're a fanboy of had to be re-branded and re-introduced in another promotion, like Cornette did with Terry Funk. But because it's someone they personally don't know: "WHAT THE HELL, HOW CAN YOU EXPECT ME TO FOLLOW WHAT'S GOING ON, I'VE NEVER HEARD OF THEM BEFORE"
