When you train it with a million examples of a kind of context header and how it is supposed to react to that header, it's not hard to get it to react in the way you want without deviating too far off from it, while still being creative. You don't just use generic GPT here which can go off the rails. Like my model trained on all the erowid trip reports, it only generates those because it was specifically trained to respond to "tripballs:" with only that. I have never told it "tripballs:" and gotten something some random recipe for a cake or something. You can put a lot more there than just a single little trigger to make it talk a certain way, you can train it on how to respond to any kind of relevant context. You can rip this from the actual game state and write to it. Like, it doesn't work well yet, but I have a little half experimental project that sends the prompt to WA first to get the results for a dice roll, then sticks that in the prompt and sends it to the AI to make an AI that actually can accurately roll dice (well, it's WA doing it but still.) You can do this with the flags that have been previously set in a game. I am imaging a header system with a bunch of <king=dragon> <sword=incastle> <character=Braindance> etc etc etc contexts set by the actual state of the game. An AI trained on a bunch of prompts including that header (or a bunch of different ones depending on the type of npc so the king doesn't start talking like the peasants in Warcraft) and you go from there.

This talk of using LLMs and stuff for game-worlds reminds me of all the hype there was of procedural generation back in the day. It was definitely a big thing with Spore, though I think even before that Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall had a procedurally generated map so it wasn't a new technology. Of course, the problem with procedural generation is that, while you can produce massive game worlds, there's no soul to it - it's just the same assets and npcs copy/pasted for eternity. So it becomes a choice between a massive world full of nothing, or a tailored world that's tiny in comparison. What makes me excited about these new AI tools is that they could potentially help bridge the gap between the procedural and the tailored. Even if the initial implementation will be crude, it would be a big step up from the soulless empty terrain with copy/paste towns. A few more years down the line, who knows? We might even have a Skyrim the size of Daggerfall where every NPC has voiced lines and offers multi-tiered immersive quest-lines. It's still hard to imagine, but with the pace things are happening I wouldn't bet against it.

I'm just worried what a company like Ubisoft would do with it. Use AI to make giant bloated endless open world games. AI writing can be amusing in small doses, but its not ready for fully fleshed out stories yet. It might be a long time before the tech is runnable on consumer software too, and I as sure as gently caress don't want AI to turn into an excuse for more games as a service bullshit.

I finally got around to installing automatic1111 and it's crazy how fast progress is happening with all this stuff. Also, unsurprisingly the most popular models are for porn because of course they are. I know there have to be people working on a model with the image generation capabilities of SD but the contextual understanding of GPT. When they crack that, poo poo is going to be insane.

I think that all of these AI systems shine when you use them to rough out a first pass of something that can be refined. It's more obvious with the art stuff, but it really applies to all of it. It's not hard to imagine a workflow for an open world RPG that involves prompting an AI system with high level concepts which are inflated into a first pass of some content. You might prompt the system with "I want that cave to be a home for a family of kobolds who stole a relic from a nearby necromancer." and it could inflate that into NPCs, loot, combat encounters, dialog, etc. It might generate a stupid relic, or it might generate an NPC with dialog that isn't internally consistent with the rest of the established world... but as long as you can correct those issues easily you're still saving an incredible amount of time and effort. Humans can focus on the high level stuff, and computers can do all the busy work.

There are several options for Stable Diffusion installs now, including automatic installers. If you have git installed, you can open a git bash in a folder then just type "git clone https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui" and then everything will start automagically filling in itself, you 'run' it by launching webui-user.bat then connecting with a webbrowser to your own local computer. There is obviously more after, but that's the barebones to get you started. There are alternatives to AUTOMATIC1111's version such as: NMKD https://nmkd.itch.io/t2i-gui which comes with an installer. InvokeAI https://github.com/invoke-ai/InvokeAI I don't know the difference in features between this and AUTOMATIC1111, just that this version is also popular. ComfyUI https://github.com/comfyanonymous/ComfyUI a node based approach, I've been meaning to try this out but there's never enough time to do everything. This is for windows, if you're on linux or mac well... god help you.

So here's a thing to go along with a post I made a couple weeks ago(?) about using AI to make pixel art for a game. Here's a realistic comparison between an "AI making pixel art" (AI prompt put through a filter) and a human artist making pixel art based on an AI image. Here's a hand-drawn pixel art piece I did today based on an AI-generated image, took roughly 60-90 minutes (spread across several smaller sessions). It's unfinished but close enough to use for this comparison: The AI-generated concept image: For the sake of comparison, I fed it into MJ as an image prompt and prompted for a cozy tropical house, pixel art. This is the output: I then ran it through the same set of filters I was using before and resized it to a similar size, and here's the output: I don't feel like doing all the manual touchups on the AI-generated one to get it to a comparable state, but that would probably take around 30-45 minutes and still wouldn't look as good as the hand-drawn version IMO, so I've decided for my purposes I'll just do it by hand, with some AI gen stuff as concept art to give me ideas and starting points This is in large part because AI just doesn't use color the way I want to and correcting that adds a huge amount of effort to using the AI-generated versions.
