With a few exceptions, almost entirely westerns, I can’t loving stand Italian movies. Especially stuff from the 70s-80s, it’s all just ripoffs of other better films or total nonsense where things just happen at random. People will talk about certain giallo films as being masterpieces of the horror or thriller genres and I feel genuinely dumbstruck as to how anyone can enjoy them as movies in a technical sense.

Totally fair, they just don’t work for everyone. But they sure work for me!

I was tempted by the naughty victorians, thought it was shot very well, but the clip i previewed turned me off somewhat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yHWrE5Chjmk

Not judging, but I had to pass on it myself.

Most of the titles I went for had some artistic merit; I can go elsewhere for stimulation. I watched Labor of Love and it was fantastic, a real gem. Shame it never got a Blu. Also a shame that its subject has never seen a home video release. I need all that abandoned footage :unsmigghh:

Though if it were a bit cheaper, I could be talked into giving Victorians a try. Maybe

I picked basically at random. I saw that The Naughty Victorians was based on a book so I took that as a good sign.

You think you can take me at Satan's Hollow? Go 'head on!
Maybe not that impressive of a haul, and I'm doing hard drive things so I can't upload pics, but yesterday I went to a flea market for the first time in a long time and I got some decent finds.

DVD:

Strangers With Candy Season 1
In Living Color Seasons 1 & 2
Krull Special Edition
Legend Special Edition

Blu Ray:

Blazing Saddles
Deadpool
Willard Season 1 (sealed)

All for like 15 bucks-ish. I was a little disappointed with how few blu rays I found in the wild, it was 90% DVDs and most of the blus I saw were stuff I didn't really want or need. I didn't really want or need Deadpool either but

Didn't look like resellers either, I think the sellers were selling off their personal collections. Also a random old guy who looked like a prepper asked me about my Vinegar Syndrome shirt, and I told him they were a movie company that released "weird movies". He said he'd check it out... I think I either made a new friend or a new enemy.

I owned this disc for years but hadn't watched it until now (because I'd seen it in theaters in 2018 for the 50th anniversary). Movie is still a masterpiece and one of the all-time greats. The disc looks and sounds unbelievably good for a 50+ year old movie. If you don't get it for $12, you're a fool.

I got some DVDs at Half Price Books and just sat down to watch one, High Kick Girl. It has the original Japanese version and an English dub, but no subtitles or closed captions of any kind for either.

This is the first time I’ve encountered this. I’ve seen Japanese with hardsubs plenty of times, sometimes the Japanese companies would sometimes require that to discourage reverse importation. Including the original version without subs, without even dubtitles, is baffling.

Rip it and watch it through Plex, you can add subs to almost anything.

The model and painting work is I think what really sets it apart because all that stuff holds up amazingly well for a 50+ year old film. You can easily see how far ahead of it's time 2001 was(and how mind-blowing it must've been to see it when it came out), because you can look at pretty much every sci-fi from the following 20-30 years and nobody was able to match it, let alone top it. Like, Star Trek The Motion Picture came out about ten years after 2001 which doesn't seem right when you watch the two films but that's how far ahead 2001 actually was.

So I haven't actually looked this up (I don't think) and I can't remember if it's different than blu ray, but what is region determined by for 4k discs?

Is it the disc itself? The player? I have a Sony player and there's a few 4k discs I'd like to pick up outside the US region but I want to be able to play them.

My parents made a direct to VHS movie called Copperhead back in the 80s. I was in it, as a very small child. In the early 2000s, I made a movie, using one of my father's scripts, called Motor Home from Hell. Terror Vision is reissuing it on blu ray, which is now available for pre-order. I recorded commentary tracks with my parents for Copperhead and some of my friends who worked on Motor Home from Hell and a lot of other great bonus features. Check it out! https://www.terror-vision.com/store/copperhead-blu-ray-with-slip

They're also putting out the Copperhead soundtrack on vinyl and cassette - you can hear some of it here https://twitter.com/BradFHenderson/status/1633533607787520014

One of the best things about piracy is taking something that exists in an official form and then improving it. Removing garbage unskippable ads in front of DVDs, more language/sub options, remasters, different cuts etc. Just a nice ‘gently caress you’ to put it out there that if you want the best possible version of something, you gotta look beyond what’s on the shelf.

yeah it gets worse every season after that, Moffat gets increasingly up his own butt and then it somehow gets worse with the next showrunner. I actually still liked Matt Smith's run, it's not as good as the first couple seasons but there are some decent episodes in there.

e: didn't realize what thread this was... just recently got the two Shawscope sets, they are super nice and I can't wait to dig in. I've pretty much stopped buying individual films unless they are ones I know I will watch often, but boxsets that cover a certain genre/filmmaker/whatever are still awesome.

Looks like the Indiana Jones movies are getting standard UHD releases in June when the new one comes out. Previously they'd just been in a full box set or steelbooks.

I know there were some people still waiting to be able to upgrade to a UHD of Raiders, so you should be able to do that now for fairly cheap. And Raiders is an absolutely essential upgrade, if I were making a top 10 list of most impressive UHDs it would definitely be on there.

Criterion is doing a box set of Pasolini’s early films and I am loving stoked. Here’s the description:

“Released in celebration of the 101st anniversary of Pasolini’s birth, this collector’s set provides an essential window onto a transformative period for an artist whose legacy remains a wellspring of freedom and revolutionary force. Including nine provocative, lyrical, often scandal-inducing films from the 1960s—Accattone, Mamma Roma, Love Meetings, The Gospel According to Matthew, The Hawks and the Sparrows, Oedipus Rex, Teorema, Porcile, and Medea—the decade in which this celebrated poet, novelist, and intellectual embarked on a feature filmmaking career, Pasolini 101 is a monument to the artist’s daring vision of cinema.”
