Looking at media reports of Russia, and of ever more authoritarian trends in western societies, it keeps blowing my got drat mind every single day that there actually exists people around us who do want and enjoy autharitarianism, in their society, at their workplace, in their families. Every day it blows my goddamn mind. Like pwwwoooaaahhhh, just like in that science universe vid. Why the gently caress do they want this? In their mind, do they get absolved of their moral obligation to do the right thing, if someone else is telling them what to think and do? Does their wilful reduction to unthinking sheep allow them to engage in frivolous atrocity in wild abandon, free to point to some abstract authority elsewhere for the answers as to why they did all this atrocious bullshit, when the answer is clearly "I wanted to"? I do not understand. Like maybe Russia has an excuse in that "we've always been an authoritarian poo poo hole to a bigger or smaller degree, and it's hard to break out of", but what the hell excuse does the west have? Capitalism? Capitalism generates economic power, and the one generating the most power can do what the gently caress they want, so nar ne loving nar nar to you? Or what the hell is it?

a lot of people think they are living in an authoritarian state already and that they are on top, and see any changes to life as a threat to their perceived authority/ natural privilege, and are terrified that someone else will become the authority and put them down and react angrily as if that is on the line combine that with the fact that masses of dumb people push for a society where they, the dumb people, have advantage and use aggression against any imagined threat- like those drat smart people over there making life better for all- and you get both Putin and say Trump voters

I also think that like two generations of folks being raised during the American 20-year ForeverWar has broken people's brains such that they can't possibly imagine that American isn't the main character of this conflict. For them, it's all a puppet proxy war between America and Russia, because at the end of the day American hyper-individualism means it's never not about us.

You say its a puppet proxy war, but ultimately, even Russia is basically just an NPC player to them, as it has zero agency, and can only automatically respond to US actions. It has no choice or culpability in anything it does. All actions, from colour revolutions, countries wanting to join NATO or the EU, heck even Russia's internal politics, are ultimately due to the US.
