The Tetris movie could be interesting, “how Nike asked Michael Jordon to do a shoe thing with them” sounds a lot less interesting

Right, Tetris was at least a big achievement that probably had an interesting development story. Why the gently caress is Ben Affleck directing a 90-minute Nike commercial?

Yeah, I haven't seen the Tetris trailer, but I can at least envision a good version of it.

They were playing commercials for this Nike trash during the basketball game and I was just baffled at what they were trying to do

Edit: OK I watched the Tetris trailer and it looks like loving garbage.

But still!

The drama looks so artificial. Like, going to the Soviet Union to win over a weirdo Russian developer is a fine story. You don't have to make it an epic drama that tears down the wall or whatever.

It reminds me of how the Elvis movie couldn't be content with him being pro-civil rights but mostly an observer like everyone else. No, he has to heal the nation and solve racism by singing a stupid song after MLK got killed.

I think sports business dramatizing probably has a pretty big audience especially people who are big into basketball and remember the Jordan days.. Not surprising it probably isn't of great interest to anyone here but will probably get a lot of viewers.

The shows that just follow around sports teams for their behind the scenes reality stuff are hugely popular iirc

Great news for things I like today. Red Dwarf was always one of those things where it disappears for years on end before resurfacing again. Well, it turns out there was a rights dispute between the guy that kept making the show and the guy who didn't want to anymore. Sounds like they're settling it by allowing each guy to split the canon and each make whatever they want at the same time. If only other scifi properties could be so lucky.

https://twitter.com/RedDwarfHQ/status/1634162231951736833

this is unusual but also fitting. Like if any sci fi franchise was gonna get sawn in half and just exist as two similar things it'd be Red Dwarf.

I'm curious what we're getting outside the show then, more novels maybe?

Exactly. I don't know what kind of drama would make an interesting Tetris story, but I don't think what they've gone for is it.

Probably? I don't actually know that much about the actual life of its developer. Though it would probably be difficult to make a movie that sympathizes with a Soviet guy in the big studio system. Maybe a drama-documentary or something? Like the one they have for Nicky II on netflix.

I started watching The Last Czars the other day with a friend and we both flipped our poo poo when the talking head historians started talking because there was zero indication up to that point it was like a History Channel dramatization. Like 8 minutes in some dude from CUNY starts yapping over the period piece drama it was a real mind-breaker.

Oh yeah, it's good. I'm like halfway through and intend to finish it. It's a very interesting decision on Netflix's part to spend probably $15 million or more on a docu-series.

I was groaning at the Anastasia flash forwards though. I don't know where they're going with that but that kid died with the rest of them and everyone claiming to be her was a charleton.

New Luther movie on Netflix is quite good. I'd compare it to Se7en in terms of how hosed up it is. I'd say it is more hosed up until the ending which Se7en may never be topped. Good to have another Luther story.

My husband and I watched Hard Target and the 1989 version of The Punisher last night. Hard Target is a loving hilariously fun movie and I wish I'd known about it sooner, especially about the scene where Lance Henrikson's jacket catches fire and he just stands there complaining about it for a good 5 seconds before even attempting to take it off.

The Punisher OTOH was a boring loving slog of a movie.

Definitely don't check out the other Punisher movies if you think the 89 one was a slog. If the ninjas coming down the fun slides shooting uzis and the casino shootout did nothing for you, the stuff in the newer movies won't either.

Punisher '89: A guy rides in the sewers on a motorcycle and then massacres a bunch of ninjas. 8/10

Punisher '04: Revenge story. Kind of a heartwarming message about community acceptance and sticking together. Fun fight montage with the russian that's on youtube for you. Fun torture sequence. Sometimes the punisher is clever in ways just dumb enough to be believable. I like a movie where the protagonist just justifiably fucks up some goobers and this provides that. 8.5/10

Punisher Warzone: The shining gem of the punisher franchise, weirdly. I went into this genuinely expecting to hate it, dare I say wanting to hate it. I had enjoyed Punisher 04, at the time I was pretty strongly into connected trilogies as a narrative structure so I was annoyed that for all intents and purposes this was a vacuum movie. I had liked the comedy relief extras in the 'first' punisher, damnit! Furthermore, everything about Punisher Warzone struck me as a cheap attempt to sanitize the idea into something that audiences wouldn't think of as "nerd poo poo" by rebooting what had already been an action movie into an Action Movie, if that makes any sense. While at the time I had not seen sucker-punch (since it actually didn't exist yet!) when I look back on the movie that I thought I'd be getting based on the marketing and why I thought I wouldn't like it, the answer is basically because I thought it'd be sucker punch.

Instead it was really good! This movie really isn't even about the punisher in any significant way. He's basically a force of nature, he exists on screen to make things die and occasionally around the middle of the film he broods a little bit between killings. Throughout the film we focus on a cast of exciting stereotypical gang members based on a variety of nationalities and backgrounds, all of whom are murdered in exciting ways. We follow Jigsaw who is an unrepentant monster and his brother loony bin jim who is just a nice boy with a bad family and also might not have access to the part of the brain that lets him feel emotions correctly. They too are murdered.

Anyway also there's some bumbling cop characters who exist to try and convince the punisher that maybe laws exist or that there's a justice system or something. And newman is in it. It's great. The only reason this movie isn't getting a perfect score is that on reflection I wanted eight more minutes of shooting at least three more cool guns and also another big explosion. 9.5/10

Punisher tv show: I heard this was bad, but that when the punisher was on daredevil he was good, or something. I dunno I don't watch any of this poo poo #notmypunisher

Punisher The Game (ps2) Some fun execution kills in this. Kind of has a splinter cell dynamic where you can grab people and interrogate them but you drop them into shark pools and hold them over wood chippers and stuff. Gunplay was nothing to write home about just something to do in between finding new environmental kills. I dunno maybe play it if you're a sadist. 7/10

Dredd 2012: This wasn't a punisher movie? This wasn't a punisher movie. Okay so plotwise this wasn't a punisher movie and it really doesn't even cover the same themes as your typical punisher movie. There's no reason for this to be on this list. 9.7/10
