That's an extremely good, if not somewhat sad thread. Placing "problematic" soldiers into basically testers for enemy fire. Yikes.

Remember that this is basically an attempt to make what's left of the Russian army fight similarly to how the Wanker SS conducts their operations. Even if it does make some change at the individual unit levels, there won't be enough decent units made from this attempted reorganization to matter at the level of large scale offensives. These tactics are primarily only useful in urban and trench fighting. It won't help at all when it comes to maneuver warfare, and if possible could have disastrous consequences at that level of combat.

A citizen, who was identified as a possible representative of a private military company from the Russian Federation, Wagner, tried to enter the Republic of Moldova in the last week, the Border Police announces. According to the cited source, the case was registered at the Chisinau International Airport. In total, for seven days, 182 foreign citizens, as well as 46 means of transport, were refused entry to the Republic of Moldova.

"The measures taken, based on the risk analysis and the information obtained jointly with the national authorities, including through the exchange of information with international partners, allowed the detection in the flow of passengers, at the state border crossing point Chisinau International Airport of a citizen who was identified as a possible representative of a private military company in the Russian Federation (Wagner). The citizen in question was not authorized to cross the state border, being returned by air to the starting state," the Border Police announced.

The Border Police states that in order to exclude security risks, in the context of the state of emergency in the Republic of Moldova, but also of the war started by Russia against Ukraine, security protocols are applied at all state border crossing points, which implies the addition state border crossing control for travelers, especially for foreign citizens.
Good. That'll make it harder for any funny business to be done in Moldova for the immediate future at least.

I've read that EW is super prevalent on both sides, the Ukrainians are losing a lot of drones too, it's just that we are selecting for a preponderance of pro-Ukrainian, anti-Russian accounts. Also the impression I get is not that the drones get 'hacked' and stolen necessarily, rather that they just get jammed until they fall out of the sky or try to return to base or whatever. Especially given that the vast majority of them in use are not military grade but converted commercial grade drones

Ukrainians have mentioned that their drones last anywhere from 3-11 flights, I think. That's why they can never have enough drones, especially ones with thermal cam for stopping attacks. Drones being hijacked on either side are very rare in general, I've only seen a couple such vids being put up.

e: in general they should basically be considered somewhat expensive consumables, rather than permanent accessories, to a unit, according to the Ukrainians as well as the military analysts looking into this sort of warfare.

expensive, how do you figure?

A garden variety 152mm shell, of which 6-7,000 are fired every single day by Ukraine alone and Russia at least twice that number, apparently cost around 3,300 eur per.

A fully kitted out brand new Mavic 2 Pro is about half that.

A Mavic 2 Pro is multi purpose. We've seen it used for absolutely everything in this war, for recon and for dropping small grenades. It is also used by artillery units as a loitering observation post, allowing for fast ranging and increasing the accuracy of each shell fired. A little Mavic costing less than one shell is a force multiplier worth far more than its asking price. Ukraine should have as many of these, and equivalent types, as they can possibly absorb.

They don't grow on trees, and the cheap old Mavics aren't generally what they want, because the zoom sucks. Another issue is price gouging and import restrictions (although those have relaxed recently along with VAT on drones)

Seem to recall making shells is very easy to automate, being mainly metallurgical and chemical handling operations whereas making drones is very labour heavy because most of the parts need hand fitting by a human, even if the parts individually very cheap.

This makes it relatively harder to make more drones quickly.

"China’s Ministry of Natural Resources has just issued new regulations on map content, which require the addition of old Chinese names to the current Russian-pronounced geographical names of eight places along the Russian-Chinese border," Radio France International in Chinese reported on Feb. 23.

The eight Russian place names, comprise six cities, including Vladivostok and Khabarovsk, one island and one mountain.

[The Asia Times] elaborates that "Under Beijing’s new directive, Vladivostok once again is called Haishenwai (meaning Sea Cucumber Bay) while Sakhalin Island is called Kuyedao. The Stanovoy Range is back to being called the Outer Xing’an Range in Chinese."

"China lost large expanses of land in its northern region due to the invasion of Russian," Asia Times explains, and now Beijing has directed a return to the use of Chinese names for them. It also notes that despite Beijing seemingly wanting to strengthen its ties with Russia, it has permitted Chinese columnists to publish articles from time to time about the vast territories lost to foreign powers, thereby in effect reminding "Chinese people of their wish to recover the lost territory."

That's probably true, and shells can be made in massive amounts on the industrial scale, but also one person could assemble dozens of drones at home with basic skills and equipment.

Oh yes another War crime gigolo prediction turns out to be accurate. Which is the thought that China will start projecting soft power into Russia's far East. The next piece of the puzzle to be placed is. When western Russia starts halting shipments of things past the Urals and instead regional commanders stockpile up necessary supplies for their own regions. They're already doing the stockpiling part but I think it will get much worse especially for the side of Russia that completely relies on rail transport

What gets me is that in a full scale war this is the best show for cameras they can do for refurbishing their tanks. Not the age of the equipment itself but the amount of employees working and activity at the factory in the middle of a war with such a high vehicle attrition rate.
