Toxic Mental posted:That's an extremely good, if not somewhat sad thread. Placing "problematic" soldiers into basically testers for enemy fire. Yikes. Remember that this is basically an attempt to make what's left of the Russian army fight similarly to how the Wanker SS conducts their operations. Even if it does make some change at the individual unit levels, there won't be enough decent units made from this attempted reorganization to matter at the level of large scale offensives. These tactics are primarily only useful in urban and trench fighting. It won't help at all when it comes to maneuver warfare, and if possible could have disastrous consequences at that level of combat.

I've read that EW is super prevalent on both sides, the Ukrainians are losing a lot of drones too, it's just that we are selecting for a preponderance of pro-Ukrainian, anti-Russian accounts. Also the impression I get is not that the drones get 'hacked' and stolen necessarily, rather that they just get jammed until they fall out of the sky or try to return to base or whatever. Especially given that the vast majority of them in use are not military grade but converted commercial grade drones

That's why they can never have enough drones, especially ones with thermal cam for stopping attacks. Drones being hijacked on either side are very rare in general, I've only seen a couple such vids being put up. e: in general they should basically be considered somewhat expensive consumables, rather than permanent accessories, to a unit, according to the Ukrainians as well as the military analysts looking into this sort of warfare.

zone posted:e: in general they should basically be considered somewhat expensive consumables, expensive, how do you figure? A garden variety 152mm shell, of which 6-7,000 are fired every single day by Ukraine alone and Russia at least twice that number, apparently cost around 3,300 eur per. A fully kitted out brand new Mavic 2 Pro is about half that. A Mavic 2 Pro is multi purpose. We've seen it used for absolutely everything in this war, for recon and for dropping small grenades. It is also used by artillery units as a loitering observation post, allowing for fast ranging and increasing the accuracy of each shell fired. A little Mavic costing less than one shell is a force multiplier worth far more than its asking price. Ukraine should have as many of these, and equivalent types, as they can possibly absorb.

Seem to recall making shells is very easy to automate, being mainly metallurgical and chemical handling operations whereas making drones is very labour heavy because most of the parts need hand fitting by a human, even if the parts individually very cheap. This makes it relatively harder to make more drones quickly.

Which is the thought that China will start projecting soft power into Russia's far East. The next piece of the puzzle to be placed is. When western Russia starts halting shipments of things past the Urals and instead regional commanders stockpile up necessary supplies for their own regions. They're already doing the stockpiling part but I think it will get much worse especially for the side of Russia that completely relies on rail transport
