It's stupid on so many levels the best thing for it at the moment is for it to be stopped ahead of being re-worked to actually make sense, but obviously this is the stupidest possible way to go about that. And just to be clear, bottle/can recycling schemes are an excellent idea, and we should be implementing them across all of the UK, but the specific execution of the Scottish DRS scheme is just bad.

Sweden has like a disco elysium style bottle recycling scheme. It's works pretty well, the tare is enough that you could just put a can on the ground and be pretty sure it'll be recycled, in urban settings at least. Both aluminium and plastics are expensive and annoying to recycle, you pretty much have to force manufacturers to do it or they'll always prefer making it from new ore/oil instead

The Perfect Element posted:Love how Labour's core press strategy is 'avoid upsetting racists at all costs'. I think it's a sincere ideological position. Starmerism is extremely Blue Labour - and I don't mean that as an insult (even though it is one, and deservedly) but as a very specific description of a discrete ideological tendency. Making the party a safe place for bigots who might be up for a vaguely socialism-flavoured expansion of state power is an actual policy objective, not just a result of apathy and cowardice.

Which suggests it won't happen anyway. guardian posted:Senior SNP politicians have expressed doubts about the plans, including all three of the party’s leadership candidates. Humza Yousaf has suggested he would exclude small businesses in the scheme’s first year of operation. His main rival, Kate Forbes, has said the scheme would cause carnage for businesses. Ash Regan has said she would scrap the scheme in its current form.

There are very successful schemes that work perfectly well in Europe, particularly in the Nordics, following this model would be perfect, but that requires the central government to run it. In this case the administration of the scheme has been handed over to a private company made up of large drink suppliers, because of course it has, hence all of the issues likely to be seen. Still think the Scottish Government should kick up a fuss about Westminster overruling devolved governments though, anything to speed up the break up of the UK

I remember when Lidl ran a trial recycling refund scheme that handed out like 10p a bottle/can. It was pretty good! They ran it for a month or two then said cool they're keeping the machine but no longer paying. So then why take your empties there rather than using the council bins? Good question. And of course then they got rid of the machines because no one was using them. What did they expect? Utterly bizarre decision to start one in the first place.

Having paid returns for plastic and glass bottles works well in other countries. Not only is it good for waste/recycling, it also provides a shadow income for people at the bottom of the food chain. It's a win-win all around. We should have a nationwide system like that already in place.
